Another Memorable Trip

KT Winner

This week's winner of Aleece's 20-pack KT Jelly Roll is Carol Feye. Please email us at lynne@ktquilts.com to claim your goodies.

Traveling with Great Helpers

Our oldest grandaughter, Aleece, accompanied Robert and I on our latest KT trip. Aleece was in that last-week-before-school-so-there's-no-day-camp dead zone and usually comes to stay with us. We look forward to her helping in the store and watching what her latest crafting craze is from adding rhinestones to flip flops to painting a t-shirt to stitching up bags for her friends from the scraps the retreaters left. She loves to create and I love to encourage it! A trip to Hobby Lobby or Michael's is always on the agenda, as well. This year, I happened to have a working trip that week, so Aleece was naturally going to come along and help. When we were loading the car, she told Grampa "You know, Gramma and I can probably handle this ourselves if you need to stay home and work." Really??? He told her if she could load the car by herself, it was a deal. Needless to say, the large suitcases filled with quilts outweighed her, so Aleece decided Grampa was a vital part of the trip. I later found out the main reason she wanted to come with me alone was so she could sit in the front seat! Until she can help drive, Grampa's coming along, too.

Our first stop was at the Kankakee Quiltmakers of IL guild meeting where we shared quilts and stories in a trunk show. Aleece had a great time holding quilts, selling KT product and counting the money. The glasses were a Claire's purchase to make her look cool and smart. Note the t-shirt!

The next day, a dozen or so quilters started on their 30-Something quilts, using our unique layered patchwork technique. Here's a peek at some of the wonderful color combos in progress.
Classic KT red/tan/navy - gotta love it!
Adore these black/white/gold stars. Check out the way the shirting stripe circles the block. So cool!

The corner white stripe squares are cut on the bias so they won't unravel, then layered/stitched on top of the background square. I makes the block assembly so easy but looks so totally amazing!
Such cheery stars in shades of purples and plums.
The whole bunch of quilters with a whole bunch of stars! Excellent job, ladies!
When our class was over and good-byes were said, we were on the road again to Wabash, IN. Cheryl Ross, owner of Heaven on Earth Quilt Shop, hosted a lovely day in Roann, IN at the Community Center. I shared my quilts with the ladies, we were treated to a delicious chicken dinner (with special cupcakes for Aleece's birthday!) and a Crazy for Pillows workshop in the afternoon.
Aleece had alot of fun visiting with the quilters and offering advice on my layered patchwork method.

Here I am doing what I did most of the afternoon - chat and sign books. My favorite part of a workshop!
We headed back to Kansas Saturday evening in hopes of making it to Kansas City in time for a special dinner on Sunday for Aleece's REAL birthday with her parents. Her breakdown of the week? Four states in 5 days; 4 nights in motels with 4 really fun pools/hot tubs; really nice ladies that wanted to constantly touch her curly hair; getting to eat anywhere she wanted; listening to an awesome book in the car; getting paid for being such great help. Sounds like a good trip to me, too!

I'll be gone most of next week to a retreat with  other designers so I'll get to sew. Wahoo! So check in September 1st-ish for all the latest KT news and happenings. Tell me about your favorite retreat experiences to win a bag of Heartfelt scraps I found when rearranging my sewing area. My find is your gain! Have a great end of your summer.

It's the Girls' Turn for Fun

Cousins Delainey, 9, (Cooper's little sister) and Aleece, 11, had a great time yesterday celebrating their birthdays together. Delainey's birthday is in June, while Aleece's is this week. This is the first time all summer they've both been available (when I've been home) for an art class. We started with lunch at Olive Garden, including the dark chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Then on to Rebecca Jane's for a fun tutorial on how to paint on glass and decorate these cute gumball holders. Such a fun store full of vintage treasures - check out the shoes! Shopping for "fun" school supplies - no boring yellow pencils in these book bags! -  and clothes rounded out the day. A girls day out is such a treat!

On the Road - Again

Robert and I are hitting the road again this week to travel to the Kankakee Quiltmakers of IL Quilt Guild for their program Thursday evening and an all day workshop Friday featuring the 30-Something quilt from Layers of Love. On Saturday, we're venturing on to Wabash, IN to Heaven on Earth Quilt Shop for a trunk show and mini class on the Crazy for Pillows book. We'd love to see you there!

KT Giveaway

Aleece is our helper this week, toting suitcases and holding quilts to make a few bucks for some binge shopping at Claire's. Her giveaway this week is an assortment of KT Jelly Roll strips. One of her jobs when she visits the shop is to put together 20 different JR strips in assorted colors/prints. She takes her job very seriously, earning 50 cents per roll. She's selected a JR 20-pack for this week's winner who comments on back to school - for it or against it? :) That's the mind of an 11-yr-old dreading the end of summer vacation. Gotta love it! I'm sure there are some teachers out there who would agree!

On the Road with Cooper

KT Winner

Congrats to Cheryl Barkdoll. You're the winner of this week's giveaway - a Sunny Trio charm pattern and Sunflower Song fabric scraps. Please email Jamie at lynne@ktquilts.com to claim your stuff.

Row X Row Experience

This is Kansas Troubles Quilt Shop's first year with the Row x Row Experience. We've enjoyed seeing lots of new faces and seeing all the beautiful rows that have been coming through this summer. Just a week ago, Wendy Hanus of Salina, Kansas stopped in to show us her completed Row X Row quilt. For being first, she won a KT fat quarter bundle. Congrats to Wendy! Thanks for sharing your quilt with us.
I'm afraid my row of country windmills (upper left row) is a bit dark for the rest of Wendy's quilt. Thanks for including KT fabrics in your wonderful quilt!

Up North

Robert was taking care of the store this week so my second favorite travel buddy, 14-yr-old grandson Cooper, came with me to Michigan. We splashed it up at Zehnder's waterpark in Frankenmuth, MI, then went to play work with the quilters from Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild in Jackson, MI. What a delightful group of ladies! They stitched up a storm - and many of them finished!- their Clara's Garden Fresh Picked runners.

This was Cooper's idea of a self portrait. Teenage humor?

Cooper

We traveled on to Pinconning, MI to my new favorite quilt shop, Bittersweet. Owner, Tina Bauer, has turned a quaint old church into a quilter's paradise with a wonderful mix of fabric, antiques and collectibles to warm your heart. She and her staff went above and beyond to make Coop and I feel welcome, insisting Cooper use her retreat space to take a nap or just hang out and use the wifi. Really? A nap? He was supposed to be working! :) After six days (and a few long nights) on the road, we arrived home in Kansas to triple digit heat. I think we were both ready to move to Michigan!

Sharing

Terry Schloss from the Oshkosh Quilt Guild shared her winnings at their local quilt show. She won 3rd place for her Seedlings pillow sleeve (a project she made in my workshop while there earlier this summer) only because her fabulous 3/8" hex mini quilt took 1st place with rave reviews. I would say so! It's stunning! Thanks for sharing your pictures, Terry. And congratulations on being a two-time winner.

Terry's 3/8" hexs - awesome!

 KT Giveaway

This week's giveaway is Cooper's favorite KT product, our Layers of Love book with his Cooper's Crossing quilt. A Layer Cake and Jelly Roll play together nicely to create an intricate looking block and border simply using our Layered Patchwork technique. Now that Cooper's learned all about this method, he's ready to make a quilt of his own! He was even signing books in MI. What a hoot!

Comment here about your summer musings to win a Layers of Love book. I'll check back in next week.
