Christmas Future

KT Winner

Our winner this week of the bag of KT scraps is (insert drum roll, please):

Pattypiecer - Merry Christmas to you and yours. I love scraps and I believe I could use them with several of your fabrics in my " collection" lol
Thanks to everyone who commented here on my blog and Facebook. I appreciate your support and encouragement and look forward to hearing from you every week.

Christmas Future

Ok, so I'm not supposed to reveal too much about the newest Christmas collection for 2017, Gooseberry Lane, but that's what I've been working on and I can't wait to share. With a name like Gooseberry Lane, I decided to research quilt blocks with "goose" or "geese" in them. My go-to resource for historical reference is Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Blocks. It's my block bible. I highly recommend it. Her blog, Barbara Brackman's MATERIAL CULTURE, is also an informative source for vintage quilts, fabrics and blocks.

I found more than a dozen blocks with "goose/geese" in the name, including Flying Geese, Goose in the Pond, Goose & Goslings and Goose Tracks. The next step was to see if I could simplify any of them with my layered patchwork technique, insert the new fabric, experiment with sizes and see if they would all play together nicely. I added a bit of holiday fun with holly & berries (a new KT Kut-ups precut fusible applique pack) and a delightful Christmas sampler emerged. Borders were just added Christmas Eve day and it's headed to the quilter this week. Here's a peek at my new Gooseberry Sampler for 2017.

Gooseberry Sampler, June 2017

Your local quilt shop will be buying next year's holiday collections in January. If you like what you see, let them know!

Our little charm quilt for the collection is Joyful Wishes. Who wouldn't love to unwrap this Joy-ful expression of the holidays?

End-of-the-Year Cleaning Spree

KT Winner

Congratulations to our December Sampler Bag winner this week:

Deb, please send your mailing address to lynne@ktquilts.com. Jamie will ship you goodies right away!
Thanks again to everyone who made our week ordering the Sampler Bags. Watch for more specials each month right here and on the ktquilts.com website.

The stakes are high and the betting fierce here at KTQ about how many KT Gift Certificates we'll sell this month ($50 gift certificate for $40). Robert needs a win this time! Call KTQ 785-488-2120 or click above for a thoughtful gift for any KT fan on your list.

Cleaning Spree

It's the time of year to sort, purge and reorganize, to start the New Year off with a fresh attitude and a clean studio. The process clears my head and helps to plan for the coming year.  I'm often juggling 3 or 4 fabric lines at a time:

1. Put finishing touches on book/patterns from Fall Market 2016 for arrival at your local quilt shop in early 2017 (Thistle Farm-March).

2. Piece quilts (and send kits to piecers) for KT's new Christmas line next summer
 (Gooseberry Lane-June).

 3. Edit strike-offs of fabric line and begin designing quilts for Spring Market 2017 (top secret).

4. Design new fabric collection for Fall Market 2017 introduction (in progress).

December is supposed to be our "slow"month here at KTQ. Our last retreat is before Thanksgiving and I'm not traveling/teaching again until after the first of the year. Time to manage the piles of fabric and quilts and paperwork between markets and fabric seasons. Sooooo, I'm sharing piles of scraps that have been tucked away for months (or years) that have finally overflowed into my work space. This week, a stack of 2 1/2" squares and various rectangles cut from charm squares from a variety of fabric lines, (including a couple of Christmas' past) are up for grabs.

Watch over the next few weeks as I continue sorting, piling and discovering drawers and baskets of treasures. I love to share with all of you! Comment to win each week.

A Magical Evening with Delainey

My grandaughter, Delainey (10), & I treated ourselves to a spectacular show of lights at Botanica's Illuminations in Wichita, Kansas last Friday night. I have fond memories of  riding in the car with my family as a kid, searching for the homes best decorated for Christmas. Alas, there are fewer homes lit up for the holidays now, so my Christmas light addiction was satisfied with a grand display all in one place! Delainey was as excited as me, making notes in her journal as I took pictures for her scrapbook. We also enjoyed the strolling carolers, hot cocoa and holiday crafts for sale. A perfect  celebration of the season. On the ride home, a sleepy Delainey declared it's our new Christmas tradition - "just us, Gramma, cause we get it." Don't you just love sharing special moments with the grankids? We're already making plans for next year.

Delainey and I wish all of you a peaceful, joyous holiday season with all your favorite people.

Lynne & Delainey

A Quiet Beginning to the Holiday Season

It's beginning to look alot like....

Robert and I spent the weekend visiting with quilters at the store who stopped in for our Gift Certificate specials. We ate lots of turkey and pumpkin pie, binged on Netflix, and started the Christmas decorating at the cabin. Instead of a big tree, I string garland and lights along our 8" deep windowsills and scatter with rustic holiday cheer - wooden deer and trees cut out of logs, shiny stars on bed springs and birds of all kinds. I love that pinecones and stars and trees last much longer thru the winter than Santas and Christmas specific decor. My tiny tree fits in a plaid tin this year.

Antique Obsessed

After a busy fall teaching, hosting retreats and preparing for Market, Robert and I look forward to a weekend away doing what we love - antique shopping. Our good friends, Jenny & Ron Doan (Missouri Star) joined us this year for our trek to Arthur, IL for a two-day mega antique shopping blitz. We also met up with veteran antiquer, Pam Buda (Heatspun Quilts), and her husband who introduced me to this wonderful venue (Thanks, Pam!). This show is held twice a year and offers the best of the best in Early American antiques and primitives in the Midwest. Since we missed the spring show, I was itching for my antique fix.

This year, we found some wonderful treasures, including this grain winnower complete with metal patches. Love, love it! It looked huge in the car, but when we hung it over our bed, I regretted not buying a cool architectural piece we saw that would have been perfect in the space above it. I told Robert I seldom regret buying an antique, but almost always regret when I see something I love and I don't buy it. Oh well, that'll give me something to hunt for next year. I'm excited to find some great seasonal accents to decorate it thoughout the year.

This assemblage includes several of the quilts I found to inspire future fabric collections, a great "Cabins for Rent" sign from Maine, a set of blocks, three lightning rod globes with stars (in the box), and a tiny red stripe child's stocking.  I admit, I'm addicted to old, worn, handmade items that would have been used by the pioneers on the prairie in their everyday life. I love the warmth and character these found objects add to our home and am grateful for the inspiration they offer. These trips are the perfect opportunity for me to unwind and recharge my soul at the same time.I'm blessed that Robert enjoys these adventures and has his own list of collectibles when we shop. (The blocks and lightning rod globes are his finds.)

Thanks for letting me share my obsession. I hope to post more pictures of our home and my studio as we find the perfect spots for our purchases.

Comment this week to win a Prairie Cactus charm pack & Christmas Cactus pattern to help you on your way to holiday stitching. Happy Fall!

Moda's Mini Marvels Giveaway

Ok, ladies, here's the info I promised to win some great prizes from Martingale and Moda to introduce the new book, Mini Marvels. It was alot of fun  conspiring collaborating with my fellow Moda designers to make adorable little quilts for this book. So many options, all of them very do-able in pint size.

From simple to simply amazing, this book has so much to choose from. And the color photography is truly yummy. A great book for inspiring the imagination.

My Dashing quilt has found a home atop a vintage wooden box that still boasts its mustard yellow lettering. At present, the box serves as a small table in front of our Ikea loveseat/sleeper. When the grankids come to stay, they'll have a spot to rest a drink or keep their phone handy next to their temporary nest.

This mini churn dash features my unique layered patchwork technique for perfect points and less fuss working with small pieces. I'd love to see what you'll do with the inspiration - brights? light background? solids? The possibilities are endless!

Comment here to win a copy of the Mini Marvels book and a KT Mini Charm pack.

For more great prizes, here’s the link to today's blog post: http://blog.shopmartingale.com/quilting-sewing/moda-stars-share-sewingsuperpower-mini-marvels/

Good luck!

More Prairie Cactus

KT Winner

Congratulations to our winner this week:

Tu-Na Quilts -Of course, throw my name into the hat to win this box of scraps. I'm making a 1.5" postage stamp quilt so I can handle even small scraps. Very lovely quilts you've featured.

I hope you enjoy your box of Prairie Cactus scraps. Send pics of your finished postage stamp quilt. Sounds awesome!

More Prairie Cactus

If the Cactus Stars lap quilt from last week is more than you want to tackle before Christmas, how about a smaller project perfect for gift giving? Perhaps a runner...

 ...or a pillow?
Both of these projects are from the Prairie Cactus booklet along with last week's Cactus Stars quilt. The runner offers a generous background for a centerpiece without competing with the quilt's design. It features our small diamond template. The cactus points are made just like the Cactus Star. Layer a diamond over a triangle, topstitch, sew half squares together, done!

The pillow is even simpler using just 3 Prairie Cactus fabrics and the large diamond template. It makes an 18" pillow with a split back so you can easily cover an everyday pillow for the holidays.

Kits are available for both of these projects at ktquilts.com.

Don't forget our November Special - Prairie Cactus fabric is $9/yd. and the Prairie Cactus booklet with 6 projects is $12.

Comment this week to win a fat quarter 6-pack of assorted Prairie Cactus fabrics.

Watch for a special post this Friday for a chance to win some super prizes from Martingale and Moda - Martingale's new Moda Mini Marvel's book or a bag of 15 Moda Mini Charms. So fun! We'll have the link here.

My favorite quilt in this book is the Cactus Stars lap quilt featuring our new KT Diamond Template and my layered patchwork technique. It simplifies and perfects the traditional Hunter's Star for less stress and more dimension.

Cactus Stars featuring Prairie Cactus fat 1/8 bundle.

Rustic Stars featuring assorted KT fabrics.
The block starts with simple half square triangles layered with a diamond.

Topstitch the diamond and piece together the triangles. Easy!
