KT Favorites III

Arriving Soon!

We're waiting not so patiently for my newest basics line, KT Favorites III. I chose nine prints I loved from the past 10 years to recolor and mix in with all the new KT collections coming out. I knew I wanted to make my 20 Years of KTQ anniversary quilt with more than 40 fabrics, so adding 40 basics was the perfect solution. If you have a stash of KT fabrics, you're ahead of the game. But I digress...

Today, I want to show you the quilts I made with 40-print KT Favorites III precuts PLUS 20 packs of just tan precuts. Yes, Moda cut Jr Jelly Rolls and Jr Layer Cakes with 20 tans in each to add to a regular JR or LC for even easier kitting/cutting. A 40-print Layer Cake plus a 20-tan JR Layer Cake is pretty much 30 lights and 30 darks for a perfectly balanced quilt.

Chasing Stars

It seems I've been on a flying geese kick lately, but I LOVE how easy these blocks go together using my simplified Layered Patchwork technique. It's also nice that star point units are made similarly to flying geese, so the quilt really just takes one block. SOOOO EASY! For those of you hesitant to try Layered Patchwork, we've also offered a traditional piecing option for Chasing Stars. Still fun and fast. A coordinating table runner and pillow are included in the booklet. Find the booklet and kit HERE.

NOTE: When you order a kit from KTQ, the booklet or pattern is included. If it's one of our books with multiple projects, such as Layers of Love, Loose Change, Cozy Quilts & Comforts or Prairie Life, you'll need to order the book separately. We don't want to include a book automatically if you already own it. Please call the store if you have any questions about your order. 785-488-2120.

Let's giveaway the booklet, Chasing Stars, and a KT Tan JR Layer Cake this week (or as soon as we receive them). Comment below on your feelings about flying geese - love 'em, dread 'em, make 'em anyway? We'll select a winner next week.

On a side note, does anyone know how to block certain comments that are not relevant to my site? I'd appreciate the help.

Have a great beginning to your summer, Lynne.

Milestones Charm

2 Steps Forward

I have a big milestone coming up next year. I'm celebrating 20 years of designing fabric for Moda. The new fabric line, coming in October, is aptly named Milestones. This fresh mix of nature prints in my classic KT color palette blends perfectly with KT Favorites III - and all KT fabrics - to create even more scrappy goodness. Find the Milestones swatch chart to print HERE.

The charm project for this collection is called 2 Steps Forward. There have been times over the past 20 years when an original thought seemed miles away. I would stare at my graph paper, hoping and praying some spec of creativity would come my way. Usually, getting away from home on an antiques outing or trip to Home Goods would cure me of the blank paper blues. Doesn't a pretty new pillow or old stool with peeling paint make your heart sing? For me, sometimes the creative process is two steps forward and one (or three) back.

For those of you who know my simplified approach to making quilts, this little gem with 288 half square triangles might seem a bit far fetched for me. I layered and stitched (2) 5" squares to make eight half square triangles from each, using my new-found favorite tools from Quilter's Select.

I'm not fickle when it comes to my rulers and rotary cutter. I find something I like and use it forever. I've stuck with the good 'ole yellow cutter for years. Now, as I get older, and my hands are less likely to trim HST for hours, I'm finding Quilter's Select products are amazing!

The Quilter's Select rotary cutter is weighty and balanced, like a man's tool. It slices through layers of fabric with little effort and much less wrist and hand fatigue. The rulers are also wonderful in that the coating on the back keeps them from skooching across your fabric - at all.Especially handy when trimming small squares. Even the Quilter's Select mat is top notch. I've cut on mine for several months with no ruts or scars.

We'll have the entire line of Quilter's Select tools right after market. Watch for more details on our website at ktquilts.com.

New Block-of-the-Month

20 Years of KTQ, Part I

I can't believe I've been designing fabric for Moda for almost 20 years! My first International Quilt Market in Houston in the fall of 1999 found me next to the Moda booth with my Stitches on the Oregon Trail block-of-the-month quilt. It was a surreal experience being there with designers whose fabric I loved (and purchased) like Sandy Gervais, Jan Patek and Barbara Brackman/Terry Clothier Thompson. It was liking being backstage at a rock concert! I was thrilled to part of this elite club of designers.

To celebrate my 10th year with Moda, I designed a quilt called Kansas Troubles, 10 Years & Counting. It featured a block or applique design for each of the 32 fabric lines to date. So much fun to sew the memories!

KT Favorites - 10 Years & Counting

Now, to celebrate my 20th anniversary with Moda, another Block-of-the-Month seemed like the perfect tribute. Here's my new 20 Years of KTQ, ready to show at quilt market this week. This 118" square king size quilt features 20 blocks - one for each year. Each block helps tell the story of my journey with Moda, designing fabric and quilts through the years.

I started with a KT Favorites III fat quarter bundle and added a Milestones Layer Cake for a dash of scrappiness. Find the Milestones fabric collection swatch chart HERE. This quilt is traditionally pieced with a little bit of fusible applique for fun. We'll stitch two blocks each month, then the pieced borders and outer borders for a 12-month series.

There were so many fun blocks to play with, I also included several bonus projects in the block-of-the-month (also available as a single pattern). Here is my Woven Dreams lap quilt pieced with a KT Milestones Jelly Roll.

Watch for more projects featuring the new Milestones fabric collection. Ask your local quilt shop for information on the 20 Years of KTQ Block-of-the-Month beginning January 2020.

Introducing...

KT Favorites III

I'm in love - with a fabric collection! To celebrate 20 years of designing fabric for Moda, I've selected some of my favorite prints from the past and gathered them together to create a basic KT fabric line. The new collection features 27 dark and 13 tan small prints and tone-on-tones to mix with all KT fabrics. Precuts are available in Layer Cake, Jelly Roll, Charm Packs and Mini Charms AND brand new 20-packs of tans in a Jr Jelly Roll or Jr Layer Cake. So fun! By adding a Jr Layer Cake or JR Jelly Roll to a regular 40-piece precut, you'll have about 30 darks and 30 tans for a perfectly balanced quilt. KT Favorites III is due to arrive in your local quilt shop later this month.

Here are a few of the projects I created featuring the new KT Favorites III fabric collection.
As the Wind Blows
Framed pinwheels in classic KT colors create a whirling, swirling quilt made for fun. Instructions include lap and king size quilts in traditional piecing or my unique Layered Patchwork technique. Jelly Roll friendly.
Off the Rails-Red
When you need a simple quilt with maximum impact, this rail fence quilt is the perfect choice. Two colorways in planned or scrappy layouts. Traditionally pieced. Jelly Roll Friendly. One of my sons already has his name on the blue one!

Off the Rails - Blue

Chasing Stars
Chasing Stars features a KT Favorites III Layer Cake plus a Jr Tan Layer Cake. Joy loved all of the open space to play with quilting designs for major visual appeal. Chasing Stars runner and pillow topper also included.
Color Story
The charm quilt for this collection utilizes 2 charm packs and my Layered Patchwork technique. Simple piecing creates rows of color laid out for graphic appeal. It makes a great backdrop for fun summer table decor.

Living the Prairie Life

I can't wait to go to International Quilt Market next week in Kansas City and see/visit my quilts from the new book, Prairie Life. This collection of quilts, inspired by my life in the country, has been at Martingale for months while being photographed and the final book is edited and printed. I'm anxious to have them back to showcase in our KT Quilt Shop and cuddle at home.

Cypress Sampler
One of my favorite projects from the book is the Cypress Sampler. The dark block on point inside the tan strips and red corners is the traditional Cypress block. I substituted a variety of pieced blocks for the usual plain center and added sashing corner posts to create a secondary churn dash design. The result is a scrappy sampler with lots of charm. The blocks measure 12" so it makes an impressive lap quilt quickly.

Cypress Runner
What happens when you add fused applique flowers and vines to the center of the Cypress block instead of a traditional pieced block? A delightful runner perfect for a spring or summer table (although I love it on the outside of my studio!)

Double the Fun mini quilt

Double the Fun Pillow Sleeve
These two projects were created to complement the lap size Double the Fun quilt, shown last week. This trio will work beautifully in my living room, draped over my favorite chair and on the table next to it. Do you coordinate your quilts for decorating?

More Prairie Life

My newest collaboration with Martingale, Prairie Life, is due to arrive in just a couple weeks. Here are a few more of the country style quilts I love to make for my home.

Shadow Dash
Shadow Dash plays with lights and darks to create a secondary block with classic churn dash blocks. I love playing with shades of tans and darks to create a dimensional effect. Great for anyone on your gift list.

Goose, Goose, Duck
Each spring, we wait for the arrival of a pair of geese that nest on our pond. We can hardly wait for the tiny little fuzzy goslings to emerge and follow their parents around the pond. Flying geese blocks in a variety of sizes pay tribute to their long lasting bond and commitment to their young.

Potluck
When one of my quilt piecers, Kathy Limpic, had a multitude of half square triangles left over after piecing the Shadow Dash quilt, she made this lovely table topper out of the scraps. A pretty and practical way to utilize extra blocks.

Layered Patchwork Mini Quilt
I love playing with Moda's Mini Charm 2 1/2" squares. This little gem is made even easier with my Layered Patchwork technique, simplifying quarter squares. It's the perfect way to learn a new method and make a cute little quilt.

Watch for more pictures from my new book, Prairie Life, and comment to win an autographed book (as soon as they arrive).

KT May Special

Circling Geese

Each winter, my friend and fellow designer, Jenny Doan, of Missouri Star Quilt Co., escape the cold Kansas and Missouri winters teaching on a quilting cruise. We are able to warm up, absorb some much needed Vitamin D, and spend a week with a lovely group of quilters. Win, win, win!

This year, after the cruise, we also taught 3 days at one of our favorite quilt shops, Flash Sew & Quilt in Naples, Florida. Harold and Cindy are wonderful hosts and we appreciate their hard work to enable us to stay a little longer in the sunshine state.

I taught a workshop designed to showcase my Layered Patchwork technique, simplifying flying geese and connecting corner triangles. My project was Circling Geese. A Layer Cake provided the scrappy assortment of KT fabrics for spool blocks and flying geese. The ladies learned a new way of looking at traditional blocks and enjoyed the process. Jenny and I left with 90 new friends!

Circling Geese
The Circling Geese kit includes all fabric and precuts for the quilt top and binding plus the step-by-step booklet.
Our KT May Special is the Circling Geese kit for only $99.95 (retail value $129.95) plus FREE SHIPPING!

Click HERE to order on our website or call the KT Quilt Shop at 785-488-2120 to place your order today. Quantities are limited.

Jenny and I are taking a break from cruises for a while, but would love to visit your area for a 3-day workshop event. If you have space for workshops and would like for us to come to your state, contact me at lynne@ktquilts.com. We'd love to share our quilts and techniques with you.
