It's the Girls' Turn for Fun

Cousins Delainey, 9, (Cooper's little sister) and Aleece, 11, had a great time yesterday celebrating their birthdays together. Delainey's birthday is in June, while Aleece's is this week. This is the first time all summer they've both been available (when I've been home) for an art class. We started with lunch at Olive Garden, including the dark chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Then on to Rebecca Jane's for a fun tutorial on how to paint on glass and decorate these cute gumball holders. Such a fun store full of vintage treasures - check out the shoes! Shopping for "fun" school supplies - no boring yellow pencils in these book bags! -  and clothes rounded out the day. A girls day out is such a treat!

On the Road - Again

Robert and I are hitting the road again this week to travel to the Kankakee Quiltmakers of IL Quilt Guild for their program Thursday evening and an all day workshop Friday featuring the 30-Something quilt from Layers of Love. On Saturday, we're venturing on to Wabash, IN to Heaven on Earth Quilt Shop for a trunk show and mini class on the Crazy for Pillows book. We'd love to see you there!

KT Giveaway

Aleece is our helper this week, toting suitcases and holding quilts to make a few bucks for some binge shopping at Claire's. Her giveaway this week is an assortment of KT Jelly Roll strips. One of her jobs when she visits the shop is to put together 20 different JR strips in assorted colors/prints. She takes her job very seriously, earning 50 cents per roll. She's selected a JR 20-pack for this week's winner who comments on back to school - for it or against it? :) That's the mind of an 11-yr-old dreading the end of summer vacation. Gotta love it! I'm sure there are some teachers out there who would agree!

  1. I love Kansas Troubles fabrics and would love to win some of those strips. As far as school goes, the kids here in Indiana are already back in school. The summer is just too short! Thanks for another great giveaway.

  2. I am a teacher and am dreading the end of summer and heading back to school! Once I get into the groove it will be fine, but the build up is terrible!

  3. Okay, so my heart goes out to those kiddos who are dreading back to school (and the parents and teachers too). But I have to say as a homeschool mother, I enjoy back to school because most places are less crowded, so this is our time of the year to travel. :)

  5. I have a granddaughter that would fit right in with these gals. She is excited to get back to school and together with all her friends. And, Nana would love, love to win one of your jelly rolls so her and I could make a jelly roll race quilt together!!!

  6. Now that my children are no longer at home, I don't really notice back to school (except for the school buses if I have to drive early in the morning). So I guess I am neutral on the subject.

  7. What a wonderful way to earn some pocket money. Every budding patch workers dream. I am happy to report my grand children as 7 year olds are very excited about returning to school after summer holidays. Long may their enthusiasium last.

  8. When I had young children, I was sad when they returned to school. After the youngest went to high school, I went back to teaching. And I have taught for 15-1/2 years. Going back to school was always exciting! But I just retired and I feel ?? Ready to quilt!

  10. Well, when i was young, I loved going back to school, at least the first day, we got to wear our new clothes and with a family of 8, that was a big deal, to have new clothes. Now I love it because it means, all the summer crowds will be gone and I can enjoy going for walks on the beach;)

  11. what a great day with the girls.............
I love the carefree days of the holidays but it is good to get back into a routine.........it's good to learn........you never stop really in your life...........it's just a different way to learn once you leave school..........

  12. How fun, I'd love to see her choices! Sometimes kids surprise me with their amazing creativity. Let's see, back to school -- I'm for it, but then I don't have to go. An education is a valuable thing, enjoy it! Spoken like someone who doesn't go to school anymore, haha.

  13. I didn't like to see school start back when the boys were at home. I know they didn't like to see it start back. We just enjoyed the lazy days of summer too much, I guess.

  14. I miss the back to school days. I always loved getting new pens, notebooks, and everything that goes with it. Enjoy your last days of summer. Believe me school days are fleeting and will be gone before you know it!

  15. I am for it even though I am a grandmother now. It is great for the children to have structure and learning in their lives. Education is the key to a better future for them. I loved school when I was there. Now I love KT fabrics!!

  16. Love seeing the excitement on Kindergartens faces and the Seniors being at the top of the educational ladder. The first day of school was always exciting and then homework started!

  17. Thoughts of a Jelly Roll giveaway made me want to go eat a PB&J sandwich, but a quilter's jelly roll is much more fun!

  18. You'd think as a retired teacher I would have dreaded the start of school all those years. But something would click in my brain in the beginning of August and I'd automatically start making plans for the new year (we start in early Sept. here in PA). I couldn't wait for school to start. I kind of miss that excitement at this time of year...

  19. here in Atlanta the kids have been back for 2 weeks! I now leave for work earlier to miss the buses. Back to school means autumn is almost here, can't wait!

  20. We homeschool so it means a little more discipline for me but I do like a schedule and I love teaching and learning along with my children!! I wouldn't change a thing!

  21. My nest is empty so back to school really doesn't mean that much to me. My daughter homeschools, so I still get some time with my grands even during the school year. Love those ideas for some fun with granddaughters ... I need to remember that when I have a day to spend with my 11 y.o. granddaughter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I bet they loved that fun day. I enjoy all of the preparing for it, but when they day actually comes it is dreaded. Thank you for the giveaway.

  23. It truly doesn't matter anymore since my kids are grown. But before that I was for it!

  24. Thanks for the giveaway. Brought back memories, i was always full of mixed emotions about going back to school. Loved my kids being out of school and with us.

  25. Looks like the girl's day out was fabulous. Back to school was always fun. Reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.

  28. I'm for education so back to school should be a good thing. I'm also for beautiful quilts so I'd be delighted to win Aleece's jellyroll. What lucky girls to have a day with Grandma. You rock, Lynne! I enjoy blog posts that offer technique tips and quilt patterns; but your travelogues and pictures are a lot of fun to follow, too.

  29. Aleece enjoy your remaining summer days! Here in metro Atlanta the kids have been back in school for two weeks already!

  30. When I was in school, I thoroughly enjoyed being home in the Summer with my parents and was not anxious to go back to school.

  31. I would love to win the special assembled jelly roll by Aleece. As a child I always looked forward to school and getting our new supplies and being with our friends and learning new things! Enjoy your year, sweetie.

  32. What a great little helper. I bet she made up a really fun jelly roll. I was just seeing on Facebook all "the first day of school" pictures and I said to myself, I'm sure glad I was back in the 'olden days' when school didn't start until Sept.

  33. Don't have any children but when I was in school I always looked forward to starting the new year and meeting new friends

  34. Girls day out is the greatest, just love them. Every year I have made my granddaughter a special outfit for the first day and they take a picture of it for her when she is older. She is really growing up and getting her own style and granny has had lots of fun making her outfits!! Also can't forget the barbies need clothes for school also!!!

  35. July was my grandchildren month. We played until I was played out. So much fun!. I'm always glad to get back to a scheduled life but the short summers make for a very frenzied vacation time. Can't roll back the clock so I'll just keep enjoying the frenzy and be grateful for the time we have together. Thanks.

  36. Being a Nana, I have a love/hate relationship with beginning school time. I love seeing my grandson's face when he shares new things he has discovered in school. I hate the quiet time in my house when he is at school......Miss his laugh and our together time.

  37. I dreaded back to school as much as my sons, I enjoyed having them home for the summer. I love everything about summer and August always made me a bit sad for summer was soon to end.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I am definitely for back to school. I retired from teaching in May of 2014. I am enjoying my second "not going back to school" tremendously!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am a retired teacher, but very clearly remember thinking the summer went by way too fast and wishing the start of school would take its time a bit more.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Never enough time for quilting even when retired.

    ReplyDelete
  41. My children are all grown up but they looked forward to going back to school - I wasn't so keen!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't have children at home any more, but I think school starts back up way too soon. I think it should start after Labor Day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Two of my grandkids started back to school on Tuesday and another two will start next Tuesday. Summer vacation seems to get shorter every year.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Our two boys are all grown up so I really don't think about it much. Except for this year because our youngest son is going back to college to further his education to become a forensics/CSI officer. Very excited and proud of him. Sounds like Aleece has the perfect summer job!

  45. Sleeve has grown so much since your shop opening. I remember her showing me items in the store. I always looked forward to school. I also looked forward to school ending. Too bad the kids never got the freedom to go to school after Labor Day. It seems my grandkids go back earlier each year. Happy birthday to Aleece!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love it when the kids go back to school :D It means we can go on holiday as the prices come down! I was never happy at school and always hated having to go back. Thanks for the giveaway.

  47. Getting the grandchildren ready to go back to school is such a fun time. Love shopping with my granddaughter for her back-to-school clothes. I know she loves getting to see all her friends again at school but hates giving up her summer activities. What a neat job for your granddaughter to have! Learn to love the fabric early!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love back to school time although it does seem to come earlier each year. I keep a tradition going taught by one of my grandmothers...buying a new box of crayons! And when I spend special time with my grands, a trip to Olive Garden is always first on our list!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sounds like a fun time with the girls! I'm FOR back to school time. I love the new clothes and school supplies as well as having a schedule again. Although I'm not in school anymore, this time of year motivates me to finish quilting projects so I can start fresh new ones!

  50. I am a teacher and I get butterflies on the first day , just like the kids! I saw you today at your trunk show & luncheon in Roann, IN , and you are wonderful! So glad I got to meet you!

  51. I only have one left in school and she's starting to get bored so she's looking forward to going back. Thanks for the chance to win!

  52. For it. In fact I think we should go to school year round!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I hate to see the kids go back to school so early!

  54. Oh man! I was going to go to Heaven on Earth this Saturday, but I go held up at work. I had no idea you would be there! Darn. I think a break for kids is important. I think that going "back to school" makes life for the kids a little more exciting. If it were year round it would be more like work is for us.

  57. Seems like school is starting earlier every year. But I am thankful that I could go to school and college. My dad only got to go to 6th grade and then had to stay and work on the farm but my mom was able to graduate from high school. All too soon graduation happens and real-life work begins and we all wish to be back in school again to have holidays off. kthurn@bektel.com

  58. My kids are all out and have kids of their own. So my 10 grandkids and my 3 great grandkids are in school. And getting time with each one of them is hard to get. So its too short of time before school is back in session .
