KT July Special

 Prairie Dreams Layer Cakes

We've just completed the first of two KT & Friends Retreats this summer. Last week, more than 60 quilters gathered in Bennington, KS, home of Kansas Troubles. Everyone had a great time learning new techniques, meeting new friends and winning cool prizes. In just a few weeks, we'll take our show on the road to Appleton, WI - August 10-13 - for our second retreat this year. We still have a few spaces available so call the KTQuilt Shop to sign up soon!

My Prairie Stars quilt was designed for the retreats. It features a Prairie Dreams Layer Cake plus coordinating Prairie Dreams fabrics. Many of the quilters chose to make the quilt larger by adding another Layer Cake. We decided to offer the Prairie Dreams Layer Cake and Prairie Stars pattern this month as our KT Special so you can join in on the fun.

Buy the Prairie Dreams Layer Cake + Prairie Stars pattern for only $35 plus FREE SHIPPING! That's a retail value of over $60 (with shipping). If you want the additional fabrics to make the quilt, call the store at 785-488-2120 and we'll make it happen.

KT&Friends Retreats 2021

One Down, One to Go

Our 2nd KT&Friends Retreat in Bennington, KS, was last week June 22-25. Over 60 quilters joined me and my Moda designer friends, Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings, and Debbie Maddy of Tiori Designs, for 6 workshops with kits. Over the 4 day retreat, we gave away 370+ table favors, more than 70 door prizes, 40 trunk show prizes and 5 grand prizes, in addition to all the goodies in the classrooms. Whew! I should have warned them to bring an extra suitcase!

Our theme this year is Measure Twice, so we had fun taking pictures with our signature tape measure table runners. They graced the cafeteria tables at each meal to set the mood, too. So fun to make! Here's Kim Peterson and her sewing buddy, Cindy Tillman with all three teachers.

Each designer shared quilts from their upcoming collections in a trunk show before dinner in the evening. Here's one of my favorites by Lisa Bongean. The string stars in reds, whites and blues are stunning! (The feet peeking out from under the quilt are from my two favorite quilt holders, my grandaughter, Aleece, and Lisa Smith of KTQ.)

There were also a few of our attendees who shared their quilts from the designers, like our KT local, Shirley Andrews, with one of Lisa's quilts.

If you missed our Bennington retreat, not to fear. We have another KT&Friends Retreat in Appleton, WI in just a few weeks - August 10-13. There are a few spots available if you'd like to learn from some of the best quilting instructors from Moda, including Lisa Bongean, Barb Groves of Me&My Sister Designs, and ME! Here are the important details. Cost of retreat is $795. Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley in Appleton, WI has special rates for attendees. Lunch included Wed-Friday.

Call the KTQuilt Shop for more information and to register at 785-488-2120.

Simple Whatnots II by Kim Diehl

I'm a huge fan of designer/author Kim Diehl. I love her signature style, blending simple piecing with applique in her little quilts. I have numerous pages bookmarked in her previous books, and have added a few more to my list in Simple Whatnots II. Kim shares 18 projects to make little quilts from scraps to brighten and soften your home decor. Here's one of her clever hints for decorating with little quilts (page 79).

I'm a fellow antique collector, so I'm always drawn to the beautiful photos of her quilts in her home. It's inspired me over the years to use small quilts in new ways around my home, too. This red cupboard serves as my pantry. I change the decor and quilts each season - partly because it forces me to dust! In this small space, there are three ways to add quilts to your home.

Kim and I are kindred spirits when it comes to all things vintage. Both of us design quilts with warm colors that pair perfectly with chippy antiques and collectibles. This little doll quilt softens the hard lines of the crock and plays off the colors of the rolling pin handles for a sweet vignette.

The quilt on the door is the charm quilt, Star Crossed, from my upcoming Homemade Homespuns fabric collection. Watch for it at your favorite quilt shop in July.

I store some of my seasonal napkins in this old red basket. Tucking a little quilt over the top makes it look more finished and adds pattern and color to the display.

It took three years of searching to find right sizes of sugar buckets for my stack. The little vintage quilt tucked under the lid adds a pop of spring yellow to this corner of my entry.

A simple 9-patch quilt draws the eye up to vintage items instead of the canned goods and staples in the pantry cupboard. Robert loves the look of all the quilts around the house, too. I appreciate that he doesn't grumble when he has to move the quilt everyday to open the pantry door.

If you love little quilts, you'll love the inspirational eye candy and wonderful projects in Kim's new book, Simple Whatnots II. It's available at your favorite quilt shop now or at ShopMartingale.com.

Watch Instagram throughout the week for more Martingale authors who love Kim's book. Comment on my Instagram page to win a copy of Simple Whatnots II at @lynnektq.

Starry Dreams charm quilt

I love the simple light and dark eight-pointed stars that twinkle and spin like pinwheels. I'll use this little quilt all year long on a table top, tucked in a basket or on the wall.

Easy, traditional piecing. And look at that fantastic quilting by Lisa Smith!

Order your KT May Special today. We'll send it as soon as we receive fabric and have kits cut. (Joy is going to be busy!)

Find it HERE.

I'm lovin' working with all the fabrics in this line. There are some great tan tone-on-tone and multi-colored backgrounds, larger floral prints for borders and accents, and lots of small prints and geometrics to add to your stash.

Love, love the vintage floral feature print. It also comes in red, blue, black and green for lovely borders. The tan with multi-dots in the background is a keeper, too. I'll grab several yards to have for future projects, for sure. It's even perfect for a party tablecloth! Hmmmm, maybe I need a whole bolt!

To see the entire Prairie Dreams collection, download your free swatch chart HERE.

Thanks for stopping by. Check in each month for our KT Specials, and in between for all the latest KT news.

On a Roll Again

There's a new book coming to town soon! Martingale's first book of Jelly Roll quilts was such a success, they gathered over a dozen ideas from my fellow Moda designers and friends to give you even more ways to use my favorite precut. On a Roll Again! features 14 new JR projects compiled by Lissa Alexander of Moda to inspire your creativity.

I love starting with a precut when designing a new project. When I can unroll strips and see a design come together so quickly, it inspires me to rearrange and play for endless combinations. My Stacked Stars is an example. I chose to layout the colors in a rainbow setting, but you could make yours scrappy or bright.

My Stacked Stars quilt in the wild.

With more than a dozen new ideas in this book, I need to start collecting Jelly Rolls now!

On a Roll Again! will be in quilt shops soon.

The 6-month series includes all fabrics for the lap size sampler quilt plus a large spool of tan Aurifil thread, plus 5 mini quilts and a pillow,  plus backing for the 6 mini projects, plus (6) matching Aurifil thread. KT March Special

We're not out of the cold yet here in Kansas, but I can see spring just around the corner. I intended to make a couple flannel quilts over the winter, but somehow didn't find the time. So, I'm starting now.  Are you with me? Let's get a head start on warm and cuddly quilts for cool spring evenings, easy throws for picnics at the lake, or something soft & cuddly to curl up by the fire this fall.

Our KT March Special will help you on your way to making snuggly flannel quilts for everyone on your list. We're offering all of our flannel fabric and kits 20% off plus Free Shipping throughout the month of March. Here's a look at some of the fun quilts you can start on today for cozy nights to come.

Flannel Days, Starry Nights features large, easy blocks for lap size quilts that are sure to please. There are five colorways available for spring, summer, fall, winter & Christmas - limited quantities of each. Joy and I experimented with batting choices for a variety of coziness. The red, tan blue Summer Evening quilt was quilted with only a flannel backing for a two-layer lightweight, but cozy throw perfect for summer evenings on the porch. For the spring green, purple, tan quilt, Spring Morning, she used flannel as batting for three cuddly layers of softness. In the remaining quilts - Autumn Days, Christmas Eve, and Winter Nights - she used thin or medium-weight cotton batting for different levels of warmth. Choose your star, choose your batting option for the season.

The Country Road flannel fabrics are 20% as well, offering unlimited possibilities for cuddly quilts. Choose a pattern, choose your flannels. Here's the link to the Country Road swatch chart for your convenience. Print it off, make your selections, and order today! Country Road Fabric HERE

I would recommend my Country Road booklet with two quilts, each in two sizes for lots of options. Both feature simple piecing either in staggered strips for Rambling Road, or stars & checkerboards for Crossroads. We have a few kits left with a Country Road Layer Cake, but they're easily cut from fat 1/8's, as well.

Be sure to call the store if you have any questions. Robert and Joy are always happy to help. If the kit is out-of-stock on our website before you can grab one, Joy might be able to make you a kit (she's like that :).

Another great option for flannel quilts is my Windmills & Fence Posts quilts. This booklet offers easy strip piecing with a twist for simple quilts with lots of charm. It's on my list!

Find the KT March Special HERE.

Oh, by the way, Robert & I are taking a little break, so orders will be shipped the week of March 8th. Thanks for your understanding.

Prairie Days Sampler Quilt-a-Long

My new Prairie Dreams fabric collection is due to arrive in late March. I have several fun projects featuring precuts from this line. Watch for more information over the coming weeks.

Today, I'm extending an official invitation to you to quilt-a-long with me to make the Prairie Days Sampler and 6 mini quilts. We'll begin with Red Dawn and piece our way through a Prairie Day with Morning Dew, Day Dreamin', Afternoon Delight, Evening Shadows and Midnight Flight. At the end of 6 months, you'll have completed 6 mini quilts and a lap quilt! I pieced each mini in a weekend and quilted them myself with simple lines. Very doable. Aren't they adorable?

Beginning in mid-April, we'll send the fabrics you'll need to make one of the mini projects PLUS the coordinating blocks for the quilt. For example, Month #1 is all about the red & tan Red Dawn Stars mini quilt and the matching rows for the sampler quilt. I'll host a Facebook Live each month (TBD) to talk about techniques for piecing the different blocks with tips I learned piecing them. I'm happy to answer your questions along the way. This was one of the most fun and satisfying projects I've done in a while. I loved having a completed mini quilt or pillow as I was making blocks for the sampler quilt. It seemed to go together quickly and easily using tried and true piecing methods.

The Prairie Days Quilt-a-Long Kit is $64.98/month for 6 months. You'll receive:

Month #1 - Prairie Days booklet + a large spool of tan Aurifil thread for piecing.

Each of (6) months you'll receive:

* Precut Layer Cake squares plus yardage for the mini quilt AND the matching section/row of the sampler quilt.

* Coordinating backing for the mini quilt.

* Aurifil 50wt. thread to match the mini quilt for quilting.

* Free shipping (plus a little surprise).

You'll have everything you need to complete the mini quilt each month. It's the perfect combination of instant gratification while piecing a sampler quilt. Win, win!

We've preordered Layer Cakes and fabric for the quilt-a-long, but supplies are limited. Call the KT Quilt Shop and sign up today. 785-488-2120.

Kit To Quilt Mystery Series

Do you like a good mystery? If you like Kansas Troubles fabric and patterns, you'll love our Kit To Quilt series. Every other month, I'll send a special project, just for this club, that features the newest and favorite KT fabrics. The mystery part? No one knows what the project will be! But trust me, you'll love it!

For only $30 every other month (+$5 shipping), you'll receive a package in your mailbox with a kit valued at $40-$50. Kits include all fabrics for the quilt top/binding and pattern. It might be a cute charm quilt, a seasonal runner, a sweet Honey Bun project, or a comfy pillow for your home. Sometimes, we'll include backing or thread or bonus patterns or a KT template. You never know what you'll get, but it's better than a box of chocolates!

Here's the latest Kit To Quilt Mystery project for February, Thread Love. It's my humble homage to my favorite Aurifil 50 wt. thread. I've designed spool projects in the past, but this one goes together so quickly with large 5" spool blocks. As a bonus, you'll receive everything you need to make both the 26" square quilt AND the 18" pillow cover. It's the perfect pair for your sewing room to show the world you're a thread lover, too.

KT & Friends Retreat, Appleton, WI

I'm SO ready to get together with my fellow Moda designers and quilters from all across the country for another great KT & Friends Retreat. Want to join us?

In August, we'll be taking our KT & Friends Retreat on the road to Appleton, WI. On Tuesday, August 10 at noon through Friday, August 13 at noon, you'll have the opportunity to learn from some of the best, most entertaining teachers in quilting - Lisa Bongean of Primitive Gatherings, Barb Groves of Me & My Sister Designs, and me!

We'll each teach a workshop with a lap quilt (think Layer Cake or Jelly Roll project), a small Make & Take project, a pre-dinner trunk show, and much more! Each instructor will provide the kits for your workshops including fabric, pattern and a spool of Aurifil thread. Here's a sneak peek at my retreat project, Prairie Stars (68"square lap quilt). We'll use my new Prairie Dreams fabric collection and precuts for these sparkling stars. I'll offer tips for stitching perfect connecting corners with traditional piecing, AND share my Layered Patchwork technique for quick & easy blocks. You choose your preferred method for piecing.

A supply list of basic sewing supplies needed - rotary cutter, scissors, etc -  will be available about a month before the retreat.

Lisa and Barb's projects will be revealed in the coming weeks. No doubt, they'll be true to their unique styles, offering a good variety of projects overall. As a bonus, we'll be in Lisa's backyard, so to speak, just 20 minutes from her brand new Primitive Gatherings store (opening this summer). You'll have time to visit and shop her new store. I can't wait to see it!

Our retreat will be held at the Red Lion Hotel Paper Valley in Appleton. You'll stay in the same hotel where you sew, perfect for late night stitching sessions, if you desire. We'll provide lunch on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. There are lots of fun eating options within walking distance for evening meals.

The fee for our retreat is $795. That includes 6 workshops, 6 kits, 3 trunk shows, 3 lunches and lots of goodies along the way. Call the KT Quilt Shop and ask for Robert to sign up at 785-488-2120. Space for new signups is limited since over half of our quilters from the cancelled 2020 retreat opted to roll over their deposit to this year.

Join our KT & Friends Retreat Facebook group for more information and to see comments from quilters from past retreats. We hope you'll join us for one of 2021 KT & Friends Retreats!

KT February Special

 KT Fat Quarter Bundles

If you've been finishing up those WIP's while staying home this past year, it's time to add some new fabric to your stash for future projects. Robert rearranged the storage room and uncovered a few fat quarter bundles from the past 2-3 years of KT fabric collections - Milestones, On Meadowlark Pond, Fresh Cut Flowers, Nature's Glory and Through the Years, plus our newest Bittersweet Lane. There's a limited supply of each line, so order early for best selection.

Our KT February Special is any select fat quarter bundle with (40) KT fat 1/4's for only $109 plus Free Shipping. That's a retail value of $140 (with our $5 shipping). What a deal! Find the KT February Special HERE.

Here are the KT Fabric Swatch Charts for each line so you can see all the colors/prints in the bundles. You can find and print these anytime from our website HERE. Watch for new fabric swatch charts throughout the year. The Prairie Dreams and Homemade Homespuns charts are available now; fabric is shipping in late March & July, respectively.

For my own use, I like to have the colors and prints in rows for easy reference. To find a print, look down the left side of the chart for the different tan prints and their sku numbers. Across the top are the color numbers. If you want to find #9651 in blue, go over to color number 14. I try to always number my colors the same from one fabric line to the next so it's easier to tell blue from black by the number on the selvedge edge. I hope you find these swatch charts useful in your planning and shopping.

Do you keep swatches of fabrics in a planner for upcoming projects?

Debbie is known for her Shibori hand-dyed cottons in beautiful shades of blues. Her lovely fabric collections echo these colors. She'll offer her experience on piecing and fabric design in workshops created just for our retreat. Learn more about Debbie and follow her blog at debbiemaddy.com.
