Fall Fun

I opted not to attend Fall Quilt Market last week, instead spending the weekend with my kids in Colorado. This year, my twin sons turned 40 on October 27. I've missed virtually every one of their birthdays for 24 years because of market, not to mention my daughter's birthday on October 22 and Robert's on October 26. (He's usually with me at market, and decided years ago that the Moda party was just for his birthday.) Anyway, throw in two of the daughters-in-law with birthdays within 10 days, too, and it's a BIG party!

We had a great time spending a few days with kids and grankids. The weather was perfect with a beautiful 60 degree sunny Friday, then off to Denver on Saturday for an adults only day/night out. Our first stop was Voodoo Donuts. If you're in Denver, it's a can't miss treat. Almost everyone chose the Memphis Mafia as a starter - a banana fritter with peanut butter & chocolate drizzle and chocolate chips. (I didn't think to get a picture until it was about 1/3 eaten already.) Breakfast of Champions! While at Voodoo, you can't leave without filling up a box for later.

While the girls were doing a little shopping at Cherry Creek Mall, the twins (Brent & Brian) were having a ball trying on cool guy duds. (The sunglasses are theirs.)

Dave & Busters was a hit later in the afternoon with a new 4D VR game/ride from Terminator. I loved it - and had the high score even though I didn't have a clue what to do! Sushi at Kona Grill rounded out the day and prepared us for our big night out. We went to a comedy club where the headliners were the Sklar brothers - twins! It was so funny to hear their act, playing off each other just like my guys do. So much fun! I'm blessed and delighted that my adult children still invite Robert and I (the old folks) to hang out and celebrate with them. Thanks, guys, for a wonderful weekend!

Fall Decorating

Some years, I don't get out my fall stuff until after market, then rush to decorate before Thanksgiving, and take it down a week later to make way for Christmas. This year, I had time to leisurely add a few pumpkins here and there over a few weeks in between designing and sewing. I've really enjoyed changing things up for the season and plan to make it a priority next year.

Love the fabric pumpkins on the textured suitcases!

My favorite pumpkins are handmade from old metal barrels.

I recently discovered Rae Dunn pottery (white with black lettering or reversed) and am fairly addicted. I was drawn to the mugs with words like "happy" and "inspire" and plates & bowls with "hangry", "indulge" and "seconds please". It makes me smile to select my mug each morning for tea that says "grateful", or a plate for dinner at night with "feast". I think everyone needs their dinnerware to speak encouraging words to them.

While shopping for a few more fall touches, I found these burlap pumpkin placemats at Big Lots and fell in love! I don't do placemats on our table, but love it stitched to a quilted flannel pillow. Fastest fall decor ever! I ran back and bought every one they had. We have just a few kits left that include the pumpkin placemat and all the flannel needed for the pillow front, back and bias binding @ $18 each. Call the store at 785-488-2120 to order (supplies limited).

This week's giveaway is a pumpkin pillow kit (above). It's not too late to whip one up before the holidays and is neutral enough for any decorating scheme. A great gift idea! Comment here on your fall decorating to win.

  11. Wow, Fall is a big birthday time for your family. Fall is the beginning of decorating inside for me. During the summer we are outside so much. So Fall brings out different kitchen towels, placemats, pewter platters on the mantel with a Cat’s Meow Amish Farm, mini pumpkins real & false scattered around & the fall candle scents. Outside it’s corn stalks on the lamp post & various types & sizes of pumpkins & gourds scattered on the porch & in the gardens. I don’t do the mums as they’re deer food. And of course my heavier quilt goes on the bed. All stays up till Thanksgiving & the pumpkins become treats for friend’s chickens & pigs.

  12. We have a couple of table runners we put out every year. One is pumpkins I made the other is maple 🍁 leaves that I received in a swap. We change the flag outside, too and that is it. Now Christmas - that is a different story!

  13. I do a bit of decorating and love swapping out quilts and wall hangings for each season. The fall palette - and KT colors - are the best! Genius what you have done with the simple placemat!

  14. So glad you got to spend time with your family and especially the birthday boys. I too, miss my children's birthdays a lot. My son lives in Africa, so only get to see him once a year. So glad for the internet!! I love your pumpkin pillow. Great idea!! I usually decorate with a table runner, a wall hanging, a quilt, and an outside wreath.

  16. Wow, that's a lot of October birthdays! My fall decor is mainly pumpkins--fabric pumpkins I've made, some that I've bought. My grandkids love when it's time to get out the fall decor.

  17. I love decorating for fall and Christmas. This week I made a pillow using a dish towel. I folded it in half, sewed the sides and put Velcro on the bottom. I now have an adorable rectangle pillow that took me less than an hour to make. Sew easy.

  20. Oh but it looks like you all had a fabulous time. I love the twins idea of fun. LOL My idea of decorating for autumn is from beginning of Sept to end of Nov my house is decorated with pumpkins, happy scarecrows and colorful leaves. I used to have candles but I cant do the scents anymore. So on the search for soy candles and we will see how that goes. I love this pillow and that it was a placemat to start with. Clever idea. Thank you for sharing

  21. I love fall decorations but sadly I have not been able to decorate this year. The pumpkin pillow is so nice and would be fun to make.

  22. What a fun birthday celebration with family! I attend the Missouri Star Quilt birthday bash each year and it usually falls on my birthday so I'm with Robert. I thought the Birthday Bash was for me every year! We are doing a rustic/primitive Holiday Meal at church this year and I used some of your fabric to make wrapped Christmas ornaments. It is so perfect!

  23. Brilliant idea, would love to win, but just in case am going to big lots to see if they have any. Over the years I've passed my fall decorations on to the kids, only kept a few special pieces.

  26. I love to decorate with pumpkins. I leave mine out almost all year.

  27. It is so awesome to be able to spend as much time with family! I was able to finish my Acorn Medley quilt. My niece gave me some adorable crocheted pumpkins for my birthday that are on my table runner from the first kit. It is so much easier to decorate for fall when you like these fall colors in the house.

  28. I'm late to the party with fall decorations except for my wall hanging of falling leaves. I have now made wall hangings for every season/month and just love decorating around them! Our dining room table now sports pumpkin placemats. They are very cute.

  29. Nice to hear that you enjoyed your family celebrations instead of Market ~ since we are away for all autumn holidays, my autumn decor is simply a wreath on the front door (I seem to add more items to it each year) and a "dryer vent pumpkin" made by my youngest son which I put on the kitchen table.

  35. At the risk of sounding like a cliche---my fall decorating consists of pumpkins and fall leaves. I made pumpkin runners last winter just to use this fall. I also pull out my warm-colored Maple Leaf quilt and placemats to use as well as every glass or ceramic pumpkin I have. These will stay out until the day after Thanksgiving when I start feeling Christmas-y. Thanks for a chance to win. I love KT fabrics and am working on a quilt right now using all my KT scraps!
