Wishing for Spring

If you've been following along at Wool&Cotton Sewcial, you know there have been a few changes lately. During our Spring theme, I'd like to share a free pattern for a runner that will bring a little sunshine into your home long before your flowers bloom. Garden Time first appeared in the Martingale book, All in a Row Again, back in 2016. There are lots of great rows from more than a dozen Moda designers to make into quilts or use individually. So much fun inspiration!

I've enjoyed using this row as a runner each year to add a bit of spring color to my home in late March when I'm so over winter. Today is one of those days here in Kansas, with temps in the single digits and wind chills below zero. Who doesn't want to daydream about warm, sunny days and the first flowers poking through the snow?

Garden Time is the perfect project to try out my Layered Patchwork technique for quick & easy connecting corners on the flower petals. Instead of stitching across a background square then pressing and trimming, I cut the background square in half diagonally to create a triangle. The triangle is glued with fabric glue onto the corner of the flower petal square and top-stitched about 1/8" from the bias edge with matching cotton thread. Since the cut is diagonal, the raw edge of the triangle is on the bias, so it won't unravel. It softly curls a bit for a primitive, organic look. And, you've just eliminated 3 steps! No wonky corners from stitching & pressing.
