Layers of Love Preview Week #2 - Ethan's Hat Trick

Robert and I have a blended family - 6 kids in their 30's with 8 grankids between the ages of 5 and 15. I just love my layered patchwork technique to make quilts for everyone in the family since it starts with precuts and is so easy to assemble. As you can see, promising toddler quilts, first big bed quilts, 10-year-old quilts, wedding quilts and 30th birthday quilts, I'm never really caught up. The easy-to-make and easy to care for projects are perfect for kids, so I decided to feature each grankid with a quilt in the new book. Last week's quilt was my daughter's 30-Something star quilt (altho not a grankid, her quilt kinda started it all). This week our oldest grandson, Ethan, is featured with a quilt that highlights his favorite sport, soccer. It features a Layer Cake and Honeycomb plus 2 fabrics for borders. The lap quilt is 54" x 62" but could be made larger with just the one LC and HC. I chose to make a smaller throw since Ethan lives in TX and just wanted something for the end of his bed. There were enough blocks leftover to make a great sized runner for a side table, too. Options are given in the book for several sizes of this project.

Can you see the block? It looks way more difficult than it really is.

The Soccer Runner has a row of full
blocks down the middle with
half blocks on the sides.

Gene from Moda, graciously taped a short demo of how to use the KT Honeycomb Ruler below. It showed how to center & cut a Layer Cake and Honeycomb for 2 projects in The Bee's Knees pattern booklet. Click on this link to buy the  KT Honeycomb Ruler now! Instructions for centering are similar for Ethan's quilt.

  1. I do enjoy making hexagons, nice project for hand sewing while I am watching tv at night. I have made a lap quilt and some table mats and I still need to finish my tree skirt.

  5. I've played with hexagons and made a couple small table toppers. I've also played a little with honeycombs and made a few Patchwork of the Crosses blocks.

  6. I've played with hexagons and made a needle keeper with a hexagon flower on top and a key fob with a double sided hexagon. Oh, and I made a flower garden block with hexagons.

  8. Haven't played with Honeycombs ... yet! Hexies's, yes, but only in the English Paper Piecing way ... haven't gotten very far on that, but it's on the list! Love Ethan's quilt ... but I'd never have seen the soccer balls if you hadn't shown them ... now I can spot them a mile off! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of the book ... looks like fun!

  11. I've never used hexies except to English Paper Piece. Still a beginner at that. The precut hexies are a great idea!

  12. What a coincidence that you mention hexagons! I'm using hexies to make a Martha Washington's Flower Garden ... from KT fabrics! I started with KT fabrics from my stash and am loving this so much (the pattern, the process and especially the fabrics!) that I'm making it larger ... and had to go buy more KT fabrics! ;-)

  26. I made a Grandma's Flower Garden quilt in the long ago years when I really didn't know anything about quilting and didn't have a clue what I was getting into. I also worked on a yo-yo quilt. I have just about recovered from the hexie quilt and thinking about trying again, I don't think I'll ever recover from the yo-yos. Thanks.

  29. I get the "never caught up" feeling- 8 kids (including in-laws) and 13 grandkids, it seems like I am making baby quilts before I get the wedding quilts done:-). I am anxious to try your layering technique!
As far as hexies go- I inherited grandmother's flower garden blocks out of original 30's fabrics. When I realized how poorly they were sewn together,(1/8" seams) I took it all apart, ironed, starched, remarked and I am sewing them back together by hand. I am almost done with the blocks and then I need to put the pathway in.

  30. I have made the hexagons using paper pieces and then sewing them together by hand. I would like to learn to machine piece them. Thank you for a chance to win.

  31. Hello! I have a hexagon ruler "Key Chain", as well as 2 larger hexagon rulers...that look really nice on my wall of templates! I am slightly scared to actually use them...I also have every precut known to quiltworld...except Hexagon precuts...they frighten me...they do 'call' me when I walk past them to buy them...but the charm packs call louder! Would love a chance to win your book! Thanks, Deb Haan, Abbotsford, Canada
