A New Year, A New Look

KT Quilt Shop Expansion

We started something new this year with our Winter Hours - open Thursday & Friday, 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm from Thanksgiving to March 1st. It would have been more accurate to say "Closed Sundays thru Wednesdays to allow Robert to make a mess and and have time to clean up". Have you ever started a new construction project that resulted in several other smaller renovations, much like a row of dominoes falling, one after the other? Well, we're in the middle of that here at KTQ.

The wonderful news is, I'm finally building my dream studio out in the country where we live so I'll have everything in one space - computer, sewing machine, fabric, design supplies, antique quilts and so much more that is now spread over three areas. That means, I can clean out the office and studio at the store to make room for other things, like a larger space to display quilts in the KT Quilt Shop.

The dominoes don't always fall in any specific order, though, as shown with this project. Now is the when Robert has the time to remodel the store, but I don't have a studio to move everything into, so we're making do.

Over Thanksgiving weekend, a couple of grankids, Aleece and Rowan, carried all the boxes and piles of quilts upstairs (37 trips up 26 steps - not that they were keeping track or anything) from my old office to my old studio, which is now overflowing with piles and more piles. In a couple months, I'll sort through it all and decide what goes into the new space and what might be giveaways. You won't want to miss that!

Here's a look at the wall that was the outside my small office (10'x12') right inside the front door of the quilt shop. (You can see just a sliver of the door frame to the office on the far left.)

This is how it looked the next weekend when Robert quit after spending two days tearing off all the sheetrock. A little helper came in that evening and cleared the rest for us. Thanks again, Rowan.

Demo complete. Now it's time to clean up and make it pretty.

Here we are for now. We still have some finishing to do - moving lights/wires and painting the ceiling - and I'm sure we'll rearrange again at least a few times before I'm totally satisfied, but it's all coming together nicely. I'm delighted with the big impact this small change has made to create a sense of openness throughout the entire store.

I hope you'll stop in and see our progress this winter. I can't wait to fill up the extra space with lots of goodies for you!

Giveaway

Let's start the New Year with a giveaway! I'm sure I can a box of flannel scraps in the piles upstairs. Anyone interested?

Moda Blockheads II

Block #37 - Dreamy by Sherri McConnell

Sherri's large 18x18 block certainly makes a statement and is totally dreamy in any color combination. I love the red/tan/navy version for my quilt, done in my new KT Favorites III fabric collection (more on that soon) with a bit of On Meadowlark Pond thrown in for good measure. Find Sherri's blog and block instructions HERE. Do you follow Sherri's blog? I love her Saturday Seven posts with lots of links to informative and cool stuff happening on the internet.

KT Giveaway

Amid the whirl of holiday activities that we're all obligated to host, attend, visit and plan, take some time for yourself to finish an older project and start something new. I'd like to help inspire you with a Mystery Box of scraps. As I've mentioned in previous posts, I'm working slowly, but surely to sort and purge scraps from finished projects. The contractor is fighting the early winter weather but making progress on my new studio addition. So many boxes to pack and move from my sewing area at the building. I'm not taking it all with me. Comment here about your best organizing tip to help me out. I'll select a winner randomly next week.

Moda Blockheads II

Block #36 - Rolling Stone by Jo Morton

This week's block is a classic that creates an interesting secondary pattern and lots of movement in a quilt. I have an antique quilt in blues and white with this block and love it! Find Jo's blog and block instructions HERE.

Be sure to check in on all the Moda Blockhead II designers this week.

KT Winter/Christmas Hours

We're in the middle of some major remodeling at the store, tearing down a couple walls to expand the shop space. Dirty business, but Robert loves it! It's already making a huge difference. I can't wait to share some pictures. To give him time to make a mess and clean up, we're limiting our store hours from now until March 5th to Thursday-Friday 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm.  In addition, we'll be closed the week of Christmas to enjoy time with family near and far. See you with a whole new look in the New Year!

Moda Blockheads II

Block #35 - Gibby by Laurie Simpson

Laurie offers a great filler block today with unlimited possibilities. My first instinct was to use a different color/print for every dark rectangle, but with my red/tan/navy theme, it was simpler to pick just a few fabrics. I don't know about you, but I'm anxious to read her blog just to find out what the inspiration was for the name of the block! Find Laurie's blog and her block instructions HERE.

Gift Certificate Christmas Offer

With just a a little over a week left to finish up your Christmas shopping, how about grabbing a KTQ Gift Certificate for a quilting friend? Or for your own stocking? From now until Dec 21st, call the KT Quilt Shop for a $25 gift certificate for only $20, or a $50 gift certificate for only $40. It's the perfect gift for the KT fan on your list. 785-488-2120. Robert will email it to you for instant gratification!

Block #32 - X Quartet by Betsy Chutchian

Betsy's double pinwheel is super cute and easy to piece. Another fun 6" block to add to the growing pile of interesting and delightful Blockheads II blocks. Even with all the happenings of the holiday weekend, it's totally doable in between turkey and dessert!

I stitched my red/tan/navy block in a few of the new KT Favorites III fabrics, coming in 2019.

Moda Blockheads II

Block #31 - Interstellar by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique

There's so much going on since market, I didn't have a chance to make Vanessa's out-of-this-world star block. At 6" x 6", it will be a fun challenge to frame the tiny star and practice my curved piecing. Okay, probably not. After piecing & framing the star, I'll topstitch my quarter circle onto a 6 1/2" background square, like I usually do, in red/tan/navy. Later. Click HERE to find Vanessa's blog and her instructions for Interstellar.

On Meadowlark Pond

You've seen lots of Fall Market and Festival pictures by now, I'm sure. Here's my booth at market featuring my new On Meadowlark Pond fabric collection shipping in February. I'll feature each project in the coming weeks, but for now, here's the short story.

The lap quilt hanging in the background is Meadowlark Song. Moda will have kits for quilt shops packaged in their beautiful boxes. Hanging on the ladder to the right are the scrappy Jelly Roll version and red/tan option for Bird Watching. These easy pinwheel projects are available in traditional piecing or my Layered Patchwork technique. On the chair is Kaliedescope from my book with Martingale, Cozy Quilts & Comforts. (I just found out at market it's a Best Seller!) Click HERE to find it on our website.

The charm project for On Meadowlark Pond is Meadowlark Baskets. Although they're fairly small blocks for me, they sewed up quickly and will make a "charm"-ing accent to your spring home.

At the last minute while packing, I saw this battery operated lamp in the store and decided to upcycle it into a Jelly Roll lamp. Robert cut off the base, we carefully slid 2 Jelly Rolls and a Honey Bun over the post and set it on a pedestal for height. (The pedestal is actually a black wooden bowl from Target. Pedestal sounded much more refined.) My new quilt-y Jelly Roll lamp will live at the store for a while, then maybe find it's way home with me when my new studio is completed. More on that later.

Moda Blockheads II - Block #30

Block #30 - Gaudi by Brigitte Heitland of Zen Chic

I'm enjoying the mix of blocks in this round of Blockheads II. I think the final quilt will be really interesting with so many different types and sizes of blocks coming together. Brigitte instructs us to piece a stripe section and cut it into a triangle for a really cool effect in her block. With just a week to go before market, I chose a striped fabric to mimic the pieced strips for much quicker results. (Done is better than perfect, right?)

For my diagonally striped fabric, I would cut a 13" square on point (so the stripes are going the right direction), and cut the square in half diagonally to create 2 triangles. You'll need 4 triangles total. So easy!

KT November Special

Stars on a Roll

I love playing with Moda's precuts, whether it's Layer Cakes, charms or Jelly Rolls. Sometimes it's fun to use the stack/roll of assorted fabrics as a scrappy starting point for a quilt, but I often find the simpler the quilt, the better. Stars on a Roll is an example of a super easy, quick and fun way to utilize every bit of a Jelly Roll to make a quilt in about 8 hours. Seriously. Joy and I each logged in just about 8 hours each for laying out/piecing the quilts. Assembling the fabric was a breeze for Joy since she started with a Jelly Roll - instant fabric collection - plus a coordinating fabric. The Star Salute red/tan/navy version took me a bit longer to gather all the fabrics since they were scattered between several stash spots in my house and the store. (I can't wait for my new studio to be built where everything I need is in one spot! We break ground soon. Watch for updates over the coming weeks.)

Our hot deal for your cool November quilting is the Stars on a Roll OR Star Salute kit & pattern for only $60 (retail $78.90) - PLUS FREE SHIPPING. It's not too late to get a quilt done for someone special this holiday season. Click HERE to order online, or call KTQ at 785-488-2120. At this price, supplies are limited. Order today!

Moda Blockheads II - Block #29

Block #29 - Courthouse Step by Carrie Nelson

Happy Halloween! We're off to Fall Market in Houston for a weekend of work/play with our fellow Moda designers. Don't miss a single week of Blockheads II. Go to the link below on the Moda Cutting Table blog for all the blocks so far.

This week, Carrie brings us a traditional block that's great for perfecting your 1/4" seam allowance. I'm often asked in classes how to find the "sweet spot" when piecing seams using a 1/4" foot. Is the edge of the fabric lined up with the edge of the foot? Just under the foot? Just peeking out from under the foot? I think we all see it a little differently. Do you usually trim after each round of strips on a log cabin or courthouse steps block? When pieced with your 1/4" foot in the sweet spot, there should be no need for trimming. This 6" block is so easy, it's worth making a couple to practice until you nail it.

Find Carrie's #29 - Courthouse Step block HERE.

Watch for our KT November Special Tomorrow!

Moda Blockheads II - Block #28

Block #28 - Lincoln's Platform by Me & My Sister Designs

What a simply cute block with such a serious name. Leave it to the sisters to make a churn dash adorable. I chose a red/tan/navy palette with a dark background for this 12" square block. Easy piecing, quick results. I can see a whole quilt made using this block with every other block light, then dark. Hmmmm...

Here's the LINK to Barb & Mary's blog for instructions for Block #28 - Lincoln's Platform.

Moda Blockheads II - Block #27

Block #27 - Mountain Climbing by Lynne Hagmeier

If you know me, you know I don't usually make blocks with so many half square triangles, but this block intrigued me. I like the geometry of it and  It worked out great since it's a large block, so none of the elements are less than 2" finished. I can deal with that! Kathy Limpic pieced my red/tan/blue version with a dark and light blue "X" across the center bordered by gold triangles and filled in with scrappy red triangles. Love it! I could make a whole quilt like this - and it wouldn't take that many blocks at 18" square!

Here are the numbers for Kathy's red/tan/blue Mountain Climbing block:
(9) medium blue 2 1/2" sq.
(8) dark blue 2 1/2" sq.
(8) gold 2 7/8" sq.
(24) red 2 7/8" sq.
(32) tan 2 7/8" sq.

My version is made from the new On Meadowlark Pond fabric collection showing to quilt shops now. It will ship in February, just in time for your spring quilting inspiration. More on the projects that feature this line in upcoming posts. Lovin' this block more and more...

Here's the breakdown for my KTQ Mountain Climbing block:
(9) gold 2 1/2" sq.
(8) green 2 1/2" sq.
(20) black 2 7/8" sq.
(12) red 2 7/8" sq.
(32) tan 2 7/8" sq.

To find the instructions for Mountain Climbing, click HERE.

Have you heard about my first KT & Friends Retreat, June 19-22, 2019? Moda Blockheads II

#23 - Broken Windows by Jo Morton

This week, one of our original Blockheads offers a chance to hone your skills piecing half square triangles in this fun 6" block. I chose to keep mine simple with a 3-color red/tan/navy version. Find Jo's instructions HERE.

Block #23-Broken Windows by Jo Morton

#24 - Kaleidoscope by Sherri McConnell

I played with this block for a long time before settling on this option, accenting the gold Hole-in-the-Barn-Door block in the center. It's amazing how many ways you can colorize this block to highlight different parts. I wonder what Sherri chose? Find out HERE.

Moda Blockheads II - Week #21 & 22

Blocks #21 - Circle and Star by Jan Patek

I love Jan's block this week. Who doesn't love a good star-in-a-circle for a red/tan/blue quilt? I'm packing this weekend for my teaching trip to San Diego with Jenny Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Co (maybe you've heard of her?), so time is tight. I decided to computer generate my blocks, like I have in the past, but Jan's star proved to be a little more challenging than I thought. Sooooo, here's a sad version of her Circle and Star. Find the good one at her blog HERE.

Block #22 - Economy Path by Laurie Simpson

To round out the weekly double block tour, we also have Laurie's simply cool Economy Path. The pieces are small at 1" and 1/2" finished, but it's a great 1/4" seam practice piece. I think it would be a cute baby quilt with novelty prints in the plus spots. Here's my version in red/tan/blue. Find Laurie's Economy Path HERE.

Just for fun (and to prove I'm really working), here's the project I'm teaching in San Diego this week at a quilt retreat on the beach with Jenny.

Moda Blockheads II - Week #14

Welcome to Blockheads II!

If you haven't been following Blockheads since the beginning, here's how it all began. There were six of us "dark" Moda designers who gathered at market to hatch a plan to offer a block-of-the-week to show how all of our fabrics played nicely together. Over 48 weeks, we had a great time, got to know each other better, and didn't want it to end. It was also inspiring to see so many of your blocks on Facebook. I could feel the creative juices pumping. This fall, the Blockheads book will be released featuring each of our finished quilts - plus a few extras - with all of the blocks. Martingale is doing a beautiful job publishing our group project. I can't wait to see it at market!

So what to do next? Moda asked each of the original 6 Blockheads' designers to ask a friend to join our group to make it even bigger and better. My choice was obvious - Barb & Mary of Me & My Sister Designs. The first time I met these ladies at market during setup, I was hot and sweaty and exhausted from weeks of preparations. They walked up to introduce themselves all cool and perky, their bubbly personalities lighting up the room. After resisting the temptation to smack the smiles and giggles right off their faces : ), we hit it off instantly. Whether we're visiting in our booths, or out at dinner, they make everything fun. Their bright fabrics and simple, but clever, designs are the perfect match, just like the two of them. You really can't help but smile, even if you are all sweaty.

( I enjoy these two so much I've invited them to come for a special event next summer at KTQ. Watch for more info here and on our website soon.)

So, we're about a fourth of the way into the second series of blocks with 13 designers. This week and for the next several weeks, you'll receive instructions for two blocks. Here we go...

Blockheads II - Block #14 - Fidget Spinner by Lynne Hagmeier

My Fidget Spinner block was inspired by the craze last year when all the grankids had those little spinning finger gadgets - some whirred, some blinked with flashing lights, all of them were crazy annoying (I'm sure that was the point). My version uses simple rectangles and connecting corners to create an intricate-looking block that's easy to assemble.

KT fabrics are from Nature's Glory (Sept '18) and On Meadowlark Pond (Feb '19)

I chose red/tan/navy again for my block. To make the block like mine, you'll need 2 tans, a red and a navy. Cut A - (4) each navy and red; B- (6) of each tan and (4) navy. Follow the instructions HERE. I'll be watching on FB to see how you interpreted Fidget Spinner.

Blockheads II - Block #15 - Corner Pocket by Me & My Sister Designs

Billiards, anyone? I'll have to check out Barb & Mary's blog to see if pool was their inspiration for Corner Pocket. To continue with my red/tan/navy themed blocks, I chose to piece Barb & Mary's block in red & tan. Find instructions for their block HERE.

See you next week when we'll have two more blocks to add to your growing pile. Check out what the rest of the Blockhead II bunch are up to this week.

sandra - Help! I am doing the 2nd Blockhead and need some more of KT scraps. I did the Blockhead 1 all in KT fabric and am doing the 2nd one but oh oh gonna need some more with these bigger blocks. Would love to be the recipient of your scraps. Thank you for the chance.
Comment this week to win a HUGE box of flannel scraps. I have to finish my summer cleaning (read "purge") soon or it will turn into winter cleaning!

Moda Blockheads Week #13

Block #13 - Patchwork Flower by Corey Yoder

Welcome to Corey! She's one of the new Blockheads this time around. It's great to have some new (dare we say "young") blood infused in this second series of blocks. Her Patchwork Flower at 6" x 18" is a fun addition to the assorted sizes of the other blocks. I chose to do just one version this week. It's a red/navy flower and will go with either my red/tan/navy or KT classic quilt plan. Made it, loved it, why make it difficult?
