20 Years of KTQ BOM Week #11

Week #11 - Woven Star

We're starting the second half of our block-of-the-month countdown with one of my favorite blocks - Woven Star. I could see all the fun possibilities when piecing it and made a separate lap size quilt just for fun (below). It's one of the bonus patterns that comes with the 20 Years of KTQ BOM pack of patterns.

This block is usually made with a 4-patch in the center. I eliminated a few seams for easier piecing and made my block in 4 sections. The assembly is simple with half square triangles and connecting corners. Refer to the HST and CC detailed step-by-step instructions included with your pattern.

When adding the connecting corners (CC) to the A and B strips, be sure to note the direction of stitching.

Here's the block in quarters, and fully assembled with the bottom sashing strip.

If you love this block as much as I do, make a quilt! The Woven Dreams lap quilt is 12 star blocks using a Jelly Roll for even easier cutting. The large blocks make a good sized quilt in a hurry. I'm hoping to make one in my new Sweet Holly fabric this fall.

Would you like a Woven Dreams digital PDF pattern? Comment here to win. Do you enjoy making a quilt one block at a time in a block-of-the-month? or do you prefer to complete your quilt more quickly in a weekly quilt-a-long?

  1. Beautiful quilt! I like to make my quilt tops quickly so I guess a weekly quilt along would work. My biggest problem is, once the quilt top is done, it takes me forever to quilt it!

    1. Good for you that you quilt yourself! I quilt with my checkbook. It's the only way my quilts would ever get done.

  3. What a fun block!! I prefer a weekly quilt-a-long unless the blocks have a lot of handwork that require more time.

    1. I agree. My attention span works better with a weekly series.

  4. Love this block! I prefer one block at a time as I’m working fulltime and find it difficult to keep up if it’s more and more frequent.

  9. Love this block. It is very eye catching. I really enjoy doing BOM’s as only tackling one block at a time is so much less daunting than looking at a whole quilt pattern!

    1. Totally agree. Even designing one block at a time is less drain on the brain.

    1. I LOVE Moda's precuts. It makes cutting so much faster - and it's my least favorite part.

  11. I enjoy both ways. The block of the month takes the stress out of having a defined time line; however, creating in a week is also great especially if their is a definite timeline the project needs to be completed. Love your patterns!

    1. Good points. I'm working on another BOM for next year, but it will be a smaller project.

  13. I love this pattern! I have been saving a jelly roll from one of your fabric lines that I have not been able to cut up. I think I finally found the pattern I want to use. Thanks for the giveaway and as always the inspiration to create beautiful quilts.

  15. Ooo! Good question! The funny answer is with both the block of the month or a weekly quilt along...I tend to be the one that ends up finishing the quilt that was put out last season...two season later..or maybe the next year! I have only few projects going on..but I get easily distracted. It eventually gets done...lol. I like the smaller kits, or just a block that I can make multiple of to do what I want with. So many possibilities with this block!!! Love, love, love it!

    1. It's good to know yourself and how you like to work. I don't think quilt kits or fabric expire, so you're good.

  16. I usually like a weekly block. If it a very involved pattern or multiple blocks, once a month is better. The woven star is a great pattern.

  18. Beautiful block and one that makes a lovely quilt. It depends on the complexity of the block. However, I generally like a block a month as it gives me time to finish a block before the next one is published.

  20. Fantastic quilt! Love this block. I like doing block of the month. I like to take my time and enjoy the process. Monthly also lets me work on other projects that I might have in progress.

    1. So interesting you use the words process and progress. Some quilters enjoy the process even if the quilt is never completed. Others are more motivated to work toward the finish. Sounds like you have a nice quilting balance.

  21. Love this block! I like to make a quilt quickly sometimes and as BOM others. I think I find it easier to finish if I do over period of time.
