I love Aurifil 50wt. Cotton Thread for every day piecing and topstitching on fusible applique. Their fine, long, smooth strands leave behind very little lint and are as strong as heavier threads. The color options are wonderful, as well.

Robert & I are enjoying a quilting cruise to Europe. I've been teaching a class the first half of the 15-day transatlantic trip, then we're stopping at 7 different ports in Portugal, France, Spain and Italy. I'm delighted to announce my newest fabric line for Moda, Back to Basics. This 20-piece collection features smaller, simple prints in all my favorite KT colors - 10 darks plus 10 tans. It's perfect for adding to your stash or starting a new project. Precuts still have the same number of strips or squares; prints are doubled.
The patterns designed for this line follow the Back to Basics theme of returning to my roots with simple, graphic quilts. I first shared my Layered Patchwork technique more than a decade ago with Five & Dime. Utilizing Moda's precuts as the starting point for layered blocks opened up a whole new world of fast & easy quilts. I'm revisiting the technique with Back to the Barn. This layered quilt is also offered as a traditionally pieced quilt in lap and king sizes.
Back to the Barn - June '23
Another simple yet graphic project for this collection is Boxed In. I visited the International Quilt Museum in Omaha, NE last year to see the red & white quilt exhibit. What an experience! I was immediately drawn to this quilt. It's visually dramatic, but so simple to piece. Just my style. We made two options for the pattern, traditional red/tan to reproduce the original, and another option using a KT Back to Basics Dessert Roll for a scrappy version. It would make a great quilt for the guy on your list.
Boxed In - June '23
As always, I've designed a quilt for this line featuring charm packs. I enjoy seeing a fabric collection play nicely together in a small quilt with big impact. I use my charm quilts for table toppers, wall decor, folded over a ladder or rolled and tucked into baskets. I can change them out for the seasons and have a whole new look in a hurry.
Framed uses 2 Back to Basics charm packs with a dark/light color block design. A simple pieced border of squares finishes it off nicely.

I enjoyed playing with a simple log cabin block to create a unique blooming flower with lots of "charm". The secondary pinwheel pattern adds extra visual interest. Easy traditional piecing.
I enjoyed working in the garden with my Gramma as a child. I not only learned the difference between a radish leaf and a weed, but also the rewards of hard work in the form of fresh strawberries and vegetables. She's the woman who nurtured my creative spirit and encouraged messes in the process. Her collection of buttons, trims and fabric scraps was fascinating to me. We would spend a whole morning selecting the perfect fabric and trims for Barbie clothes, then sewed them by hand. It was a special time spent with a special lady. She passed away in my early twenties before I started quilting, but I'm sure she's rooting me on from her garden in Heaven.
My quilt, Gramma Ethel's Garden, is in appreciation of her unconditional love and support throughout my life. The simple-to-piece blocks create a garden of blooms in prim rows, just like her garden from my childhood memories. Do you have a special memory of a Grandmother?

Thanks for all of your kind words of support over these past few weeks when everything hit the fan at the same time. To update, Robert fell on the ice the day after Christmas and broke 4 ribs. With a severed cold/cough, he was miserable. He was out of commission for almost 2 weeks before starting back to work part time, but is much better now. The store is open and orders are shipping on time. On Dec. 28th, my Mom had a stroke and was hospitalized. She's now in a nursing home, recuperating and getting stronger each day. I was stretched pretty thin for a while helping Robert get around, getting Mom settled in and taking care of our 14 mo-old grandaughter several days/nights a week. Whew! It's all much better now, so I can continue to catch up with KTQ.
