Patchwork Garden Quilt Shop Visit

Pam Buda, of Heartspun Quilts, and I just returned from a delightful teaching trip to upstate NY at Patchwork Garden in East Amherst. Joan and Bev are shop owners with the most - hospitality, energy, enthusiasm and creativity. Their store is housed in a restored old house with loads of vintage charm and modern amenities. We immediately felt a warm welcome - even before we entered the store!
How fun is this? Pam & I were tickled over the sign in front of
Patchwork Garden Quilt Shop in East Amherst, NY.

They have a great selection of samples & fabrics for KT fans. With 2 floors
of fabric in every palette by dozens of designers, wool, books and
patterns galore, it's a quilter's paradise.
The barn on Joan & Dave Roger's property housed the quilting classes -
and Pam & me! The open pavilion on the front was a favorite spot for cutting
and hand-stitching while gazing out upon the pond and wildlife.
What an ideal spot for workshops! I loved the quiet spot to relax
at the end of the day. Just like home.

One of the half day classes was quilter's choice of Mini Table Treats.  Even
though the heat was slowly rising, these quilters kept their cool -
and their sunny smiles - throughout the day.
In just 3 hours, they nearly completed their projects!

So much fun to hang out with this bunch of characters all weekend!

Pam taught her Settler's Puzzle quilt, which will also be the quilt she'll share on our Great Girlfriend Getaway retreat to Mackinaw City, MI in September. I demonstrated my layered patchwork technique with Aleece's Charming Stars, which is one of the projects in the new Layers of Love book. It's also the featured quilt of the week.

Start with a charm and mini charm for the wall quilt or a Layer Cake & charm for the large lap quilt (90" sq.) plus background and borders for a new take on an old favorite, Ohio Stars. This quilt is for my oldest granddaughter, Aleece, who's almost 10. She's been fondling fabric and rearranging charm squares since she was a toddler. Now, she helps in the shop folding fat quarters and assembling coordinating packs like a seasoned quilter. Her version of this quilt will inevitably be made with one of her favorite designer's charm packs Pieces From My Heart by Sandy Gervais. See and read more about Aleece in Layers of Love

Add a mini charm to a charm square; stitch. Layer with another charm square;
stitch diagonally to create 2 half square triangle blocks. Easy!  For the lap
size quilt, choose a Layer Cake and charm pack.

Comment this week on your favorite quilting retreat to win a Layers of Love book when it makes it's deput soon. Have we talked about that recently? Oh well, retreats are always so much fun, let's talk about them some more! See you next Monday and have a blast this 4th of July weekend!

  1. Looks like a beautiful place for a retreat. I've never done one like that. I've only gone to daytime retreats, where you can stay home at night or get a room nearby--no "on sight" accomodations. Looks like so much fun!

  17. My favorite quilt retreat is Lake Arrowhead Retreats in the mountains of Southern CA. Of course I'm biased as one of the owners! We meet so many nice quilters by hosting the retreats and have been rewarded with many lifelong friends. As a quilter, I enjoy seeing everyone's works in progress...very inspirational!

  19. I've never been to a quilting retreat or even a class for that matter! I'm so thankful for online tutorials! The closest quilt shop is about 1 1/2 hrs away but with 5 boys here at home, my house would fall apart if I left for very long!

  22. A few of us ladies from a couple different churches go to Shipshewana, Indiana. It is a super huge flea market. It is in Amish/Mennonite country. I'm talking several QUILT SHOPS all over. Over in Middlebury too, just next county over. It is quilters Heaven. Everyone in all surrounding states knows to come here. Great quilt retreat ever !!

  26. I'm no connoisseur but I enjoy our local Cedar Quilters Chest retreat every January. I especially like the all night sew on Friday night. I'm afraid we've outgrown the location, though and I'm waiting to see if there is anywhere else available in our town.

  35. 2 - 3 times a year I go to Todd Hall Retreat Center in Columbia IL with my guild friends. Twice a year I go to Sprague's Kinderhook retreat near Kinderhook IL. I don't know how I would survive without these getaways with my friends!

  36. I get together with a group of friends met on the internet in North Carolina in Oct. and next year I'm headed for Empty Spools in Asilomar... Excited about both!

  37. The only retreat I participated in was a one day retreat with Sue Daley from Australia. The retreat was on my birthday so that made it extra special. Two days later I welcomed our second granddaughter into the world and two days after that I welcomed our third granddaughter into the world. It was an exciting few days for me.

  38. Sawmill Creek Cottages in Little Smoky, Alberta Canada! THE best! You sleep in adorable cottages with comfy beds, decorated in different themes. The sewing level in the main house is roomy, comfortable chairs, an OTT light at every table. Then there's the food....AMAZING! It truly is Heaven on Earth!!

  39. My favorite retreat is our "Twisted Sisters Retreat" at GreenBriar Retreat Center in Eustace, TX. It's coming up next month, and we can't wait! All the comforts of home and wonderful meals too. What could be better than quality sewing time with your quilting friends?

    Happy Birthday Lynne!

  40. I always enjoy going to my quilt guild's January retreat. It is held in a very wooded State Park and we usually have snow. It is extremely beautiful with the snow covered trees and seeing the deer and birds. It is just way too much getting to sew with 80+ quilters and no cooking!

  41. My favorite quilt retreat is held at Metigoshe Ministries. It is beautiful outside and inside with theme rooms to stay in. Quilting with friends for hours and enjoying food with them that we don't have to cook...outstanding!
