Layers of Love Preview Week #5

Layers of Love Week #4 Winner

Congratulations to dortha - you're the winner of this week's Layers of Love book giveaway. Just a couple weeks and they'll be hot off the presses - I so excited! Thanks to all of your comments about your favorite retreats. I'll be looking into some of them :).

Layers of Love Preview #5 - Rowan's Rails

The Layers of Love book features mini-bio's of each of our 8 grankids from oldest to youngest - kinda. It all depended on how the pages/instructions fell. And that's kinda how I'm presenting this preview. Rowan is actually the third oldest, but Aleece's Charming Stars seemed more applicable last week since it was the workshop quilt at Patchwork Garden. When Rowan checked my blog last week looking for "his" quilt, he wanted to know why a 9-year-old's quilt was featured before his - he is, after all, 11 1/2.  I assured him he'd get more space for his blog post this week and he was totally cool with it. I love how much pride and interest the grankids have shown for this book. They're even asking for copies for friends! Several family members who don't quilt (and don't get what I do for a living) are already asking about it - something of a family album, I suppose. Anyway, without further ado, here's Rowan's Rails. With a Jelly Roll layered over a planned background, this is one of the simplest projects in the book with fabulous results. I like the way your eye dances across the quilt top from one corner to the other, following the steps. At 72" square, it makes a perfect size lap quilt - or add wider borders top & bottom for a twin bed quilt.

Layer a Jelly Roll strip over a square and stitch to create each block.
Then sew squares together in rows following the color-coded
diagram. So simple! Perfect for the man in your life.

My question this week is all about family - do you make quilts for everyone in your family? Does everyone "get it" and appreciate your quilts? What percentage of quilts do you make for yourself? Comment here to win a Layers of Love book. See you next week!

  1. I have made a quilt for each of my children. I think they appreciated them. I need to make one for my hubby. Love the colors of your lines. They would work great for a "man" quilt.

    1. My name is Taylor Borg,All thanks goes to Dr.Trust for saving my marriage from toning apart.i feel so grateful and only have good words about a powerful spell caster named Dr.Trust who helped me bring back my wife. We had been apart for 4 months, at first I was thinking if I was doing the right thing by contacting a spell caster, but I so much love my wife and won't give her up for anything in this world. I decided to contact Dr.Trust through his mail address I found on several testifiers messages online, and I told him about my situation, he laughed and told me my wife will be back to me in the next 48 hours. I felt it wasn't going to happen at first until my wife called me and was so eager to have me back more than anything on earth.. Now we are together and she cant do without me,and both of us are happy. I feel so happy sharing this testimony because there was no negative act attached to his work. His work was smooth and fast. Thanks to Dr.Trust for bringing back happiness to my life. I swear with my life that Dr.Trust is a man to trust and take your problems to. You can contact him on his e-mail if you really truly want your love back. dr.(ULTIMATESPELLCAST@GMAIL.COM OT ULTIMATESPELLCAST@YAHOO.COM TEL: +2348156885231)

  2. I have made all the nieces and nephews a quilt for graduation. I think they appreciate the time and effort put into them. My brother and sisters do love it when I give them a quilt.

  3. Yes, we're a small family, so everyone has several. My niece just had a baby and so my sisters and I each made him one! Guess even a baby can't have too many!

  4. I have a fairly large family, lots of nieces & nephews & great ones too. I am on a plan to make all of them a quilt each, but they keep having babies, so the babies get quilts then the parents ask when they are getting a quilt! Some love the quilts, some just don't 'get it'. But I make & give them because I feel happy about it, what they think is not my problem. Having said that it is sad if you visit & the quilt you made them with love is on the sofa where the dog sleeps!

  5. I haven't made a quilt for everyone in my family yet but almost. Until recently I hadn't made any for myself but now I am doing that. They all love the quilts I made them..

  6. Ahh Lynne, Rowan's Rails is on my list! Simply love it! My son was the very first family member to get a quilt from me. My mother in law and hubby will get one soon (both still a WIP). Very close friends I consider family get baby quilts. Zero percent of my quilts I make are personally for me, but I'm currently making your mini Spare Change that I plan to keep so I can display it on the wall. :-) Yes!!! Thankfully my family titally gets my quilting and they encourage it! My hubby and soon actually like to go to quilt shops! I'm super blessed! Oh, and my MIL is big time into quilting, So I have a quilting buddy. :-)

  7. I make quilts for my family. They appreciate the quilts. I also make prayer quilts for others. Your new books sounds awesome.

  8. I make a new quilt every year for each of my three children. I slip into their rooms on Christmas morning and cover them with the new quilt. They definitely "get it" and are appreciative. This year we hosted one of my daughter's college roommates over the winter break. She, too, got a quilt for Christmas and was so grateful. I was happy to see the quilt on her bed when we visited the girls in February.

  9. I've made a quilt for all of my family members - most of them appreciate it. I gave away a number of quilts before I finally kept one for myself but I still give away most of my quilts.

  10. I love making quilts for my family. Right now I am working on throw size quilts for my two three old grandchildren for Christmas. They also have a special jungle quilt to use when they come to Grammie's. Two years ago I gave each of my three sister-in-laws a lap quilt for Christmas. The one who received the quilt made out of Kansas Troubles fabrics loves hers. It is fun to give a gift with love sewn in. Thank you for the chance to win your new book!

    1. After 9 years in marriage with my hubby with 3 kids, my husband started going out with other ladies and showed me cold love, on several occasions he threatens to divorce me if I dare question him about his affair with other ladies, I was totally devastated and confused until a old friend of mine told me about a spell caster on the internet Dr. Trust who help people with the relationship and marriage problem by the powers of love spells, at first I doubted if such thing ever exists but decided to give it a try, when I contact him, he helped me cast a spell and within 24hours my husband came back to me and started apologizing, now he has stopped going out with ladies and he his with me for good and for real. Contact this great spell caster for your relationship or marriage problem at ultimatespellcast@gmail.com. Goodluck or Ultimatespellcast@yahoo.com

  11. I have made quilts for each of our children and now to look at ones for the grandchildren. Always have one for our bed too. Plus ones for anyone to cuddle up on the couch. Thank you for the chance to win your new book. So love the colours in the quilts.

  12. I enjoy making quilts for people, not just my family. I think my family appreciates the time and thought that go into their quilts. They have helped me with either colors or patterns for themselves or others. My daughters, 18 and 11 are both blossoming in quilting. I give away at least 60% of my quilts to Project Linus and then friends and family. I am trying to balance things and not be pressured into making a quilt because I feel guilty. It is more a matter of enough hours in the day to sew all the ideas and fabric I have! :-) . Love this new quilt you showed today. Always looking for boy quilts! I have 4 of those myself. Looking forward to your new book. K-

  13. Quilts are not very common in our country. This exclusive. I want to make every quilt in memory of Me. Already sewed her son and husband. Others wait ... It's so nice when your work is like!

  14. I do make quilts for my family. They don't really understand why it has to take so long and I have an easier time making them for family that don't live with me because they don't know.

  15. My family (husband, 3 boys and Murphy the dog) appreciate and enjoy my quilts! Thanks for the giveaway.

  16. I have made quilts mostly for babies in the family, and close friends. I am working on quilts for grandsons now, and have several small projects planned for my own house (table runners and wall quilts.) They are much appreciated when I make them. Love the Rowan's Rails!

  17. I haven't made quilts for all of my family members. Our dog probably has more quilts than any of the family members! :))) Yes, my family members get my "hobby".Thank you for another chance to win.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I've made quilts for my children and grandchildren. My son's on his second one! I guess I should have had a bigger family :)

  19. Most of my quilts have been for babies so far but as my children get older, I'm trying to make them one for each major milestone....Eagle scout, graduation, wedding. I still don't have one on my bed! Maybe I need to try this quick new method!

  20. My goal is to make one for each of my grandchildren, although it may be college or marriage when they get one. Right now, they are younger and have sufficient bedding. I have a dil who is also into quilting, we have wonderful discussions, the others, not so much. But they are tolerant and they like the quilts. Thanks.

  21. I've made quilts for my family, but they don't get it. I heavily hand-quilted one for my sister and started early (June) to have it done by Christmas - I was close and could only show her the results before I took it back to finish it. She commented to a friend of hers about it and was a bit disdainful until the friend, who is a quilter, looked at it and explained to her how much work was in the quilt - it now hangs on a wall in her living room. My son gets it, thankfully, but his girlfriend, who is a bit of a minimalist, finds my sewing room shocking - although she has said she wouldn't mind a quilt!

  22. I have always made quilts for new babies in our family, but the family is getting to large to continue. I'm working on sisters quilts now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yes, we have a small family. Both children, grandson, and hubby all have quilts they love and use. I make my quilts to be loved to pieces. Not to keep in a closet or hang on a wall.

  24. My son and daughter in law loves my quilts so I make some for them. My daughter does not so I have stopped giving to her. I do make several pieces for our home.

  26. I've made quilts for every member of my immediate family at least once, some a few. Also I've made a lot of quilts for other family and friends and more baby quilts than I can remember. I made a bears paw flimsy in a lot of pink and white, about 8 yrs ago when I finished radiation but, I haven't quilted it yet. I think I need to get it done, it would be nice to enjoy it before I forget about it. I think Rowan's quilt is a wonderful manly quilt, great design. ;-> Toni Anne

  27. I've made lots of quilts for family members, as well as for QOV's and other donations. I'm not too attached to them once I've had the fun of making them, I'm happy to let them go.

  28. I make quilts for everyone in my family .... From the time the kids are babies and as they reach different milestones in life. Everyone appreciates my work and are very thankful for the quilts. As I've grown as a quilter I can express my different talents in my quilts. I also make at least 4 charity quilts a month for the local woman's shelter. I give away more quilts than I keep for myself.... As I finish a quilt the question comes " who is that for Mom"

  29. My 4 Daughters have at least 2 each. They have 1 Christmas and another. All 6 grand kids have one, hubby and Sister and sister-in-laws and brother-in-law. Obviously I love making quilts because I also make and keep them for myself. I sure hope those who have received them appreciate them.

  30. I have only been quilting for 5 years but I have made quilts for our family. Everyone has one. I love giving them and seeing the look on their faces. My 17 y/o granddaughter wrapped herself in hers and didn't come out the whole evening. What a great feeling that was. Working on college quilts for 2 grandchildren now.

  31. My family are my excuses for making quilts! ha! And they totally "get it". In fact, my daughter used to be torn about even using the quilts I make for her family. I told her that I make quilts to be loved and used ... they're definitely not show or museum quality (and that's ok ... I love making quilts, and that's all that matters in my world! ha!). I've made probably 20-25 quilts and kept 5 for us.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I have made baby quilts for each of the seven grandchildren and a bed quilt for each of my adult children. Also, friends and neighbors have received quilts as Christmas gifts, as well as family members through the years. They are appreciate and valued, but also used. The baby quilts ended up being floor quilts.

  33. Most quilts I make I give away or donate....even if they started out being for me. Most people truly appreciate them, I have had a few comment that they weren't enough...ie just a lap quilt....but my joy is in making them so (raspberry). It's hard to believe I am getting ready to make my first graduation quilt for a grandchild. Eeeeek! Thank you for all of your inspiration!

  34. Love the look of Rowan's Rails! I've made quilts for my grandparents, parents, sister, and both nephews. I've also made some for myself and a couple for charity projects. My grandparents and parents seem to be most impressed with my work (especially since I hadn't done any sewing until I started quilting!).

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes, of course, making quilts for family and friends is my passion. The stories that accompany the quilts are the best part, so they can really enjoy and appreciate the quilts!

  36. I have made my daughter a quilt and working on my son's. I've made 3 of my 7 grandchildren quilts and working on plans for the others. :) I really like Rowan's Rails - looks like it would be a great one for my 10 year old grandson. Thanks for sharing!

  37. I have made quilts for all my kids and their wives and kids. I have made them for other family members but most don't really seem to appreciate them. So I am careful who I make quilts for.

I made 4 for my granddaughter and 1 each for my best friend, the church secretary for Christmas, a niece for a wedding gift, and both daughters. I still have to do one for both sons but they are a lot harder to buy material for etc. I'm hand-quilting one for the first time and that will also be the first one that will be mine.

Thank you for the shop visit today and the personal picture. I was so happy to stand beside the PRO that you are!

As I am planning a family reunion for next year, your BRILLIANT new book, making cameos of your grandchildren, will be a new companion in my planning. I believe I pour my life into a quilt thinking about the receiver and the legacy that the quilt "time capsule" represents.

Thank you for your encouragement to slow and fearful sewers!

  53. Well, I do make most of my quilts for other people, and I don't necessarily think they understand the time and effort that go into them, but most people appreciate them because they are homemade and made with love.

  55. I have been making quilts for family and others for about 20 years. Sixteen of the past years were quilts for Canines for Charity in Casper, Wyoming. The other day my husband had taken a gift to a couple that have been friends for years. She said that one of these days she was going to come over and see all the quilts I had made she had heard about. My husband said she would be out of luck as I had never made one to keep!! I honestly hadn't thought about it!! Sooo, what to do but make one and I am working on it right now. The one that jumped out at me and touched my heart was of course, the five and dime using Kansas Troubles since I am a Kansan! I have changed it a little by putting the blocks together with navy flannel and will back it with flannel. I'm using the mini charms for corner stones--perfect!!! This will be my warm quilt for winter!! I love the primitive look. Thanks, Lynn, for your inspiration!!!

  57. We have a large blended family-2 his, 2 mine, 2 ours, which began in 1975 and now we have 20 grandchildren ranging from 30 to 8, and expecting number 17 great-grandson in 3 weeks...so to brag and say that I have made everyone a quilt is just bragging! I do try though. I have lots of hobbies, and quilting is one of them. I have always been drawn to Kansas Troubles fabrics so you have tempted me alot....and I can't wait for the APQ's newest magazine with your quilt on the front-I want to do it. Last year, I had a reality check and decided to make quilts during the year, and then number the finished quilts with tags, and then put corresponding numbers in a bag, and whoever drew the number 1 got their first pick, etc. etc. but next year at Christmas, you couldn't draw a number if you already had won a quilt a previous year. That way, maybe everyone will get covered before I leave this earthly world. I started this hobby late in life, but love your quilts and want to make them all...as I sure have bought the fabrics as my stash will attest, and I can't stop buying....but I love Kansas Troubles Quilters...and glad I found this blog site!

after dating my boyfriend Wayne for about 4 years ,like every woman i was expecting him to ask the big question.when i was already planning a family with Wayne something terrible happened .he started acting funny and sometimes out of control..i was devastated and lost for words because i could not ascertain what was happening .after thorough investigation i figured out that my man has fallen head over heels for another woman .for days i was confused ,i tried talking to him but things got worse .
i came online and started looking for solutions ,i met so many spell casters but they were only interested in my money .After spending so much on fake spell casters , came across Dr aruya ,i thought he was just like the others .out of curiosity i gave him a try and to my surprise he cast a spell without collecting a dime from me .i was not sure the spell would work but to my greatest surprise my boyfriend came home that day begging and asking for my forgiveness .

  62. I was in total despair when I found Dr. Todd. My life was going terrible and I didn't know if I was coming or going. I had just gone through a rough divorce, wasn't making enough money to sustain me and my children, and my 17 year old son had just gone to jail for the first time. When I talked to him, I immediately found a sense of peace. He was very honest with me and I could feel that. He also told me that everything would be okay. After my work began, things began to change. My bills were all caught up, the relationship I was in became much stronger, I was never FLAT broke, and my son was released from jail earlier than we expected!! I also completely got over the failed marriage and began to move on. And, received a better position at my job which will cause an $800 per month increase!! I felt completely comfortable with the work that was being done because I was always encouraged by Dr. Todd. manifestspellcast@gmail.com is the BEST!!!!
