Another Memorable Trip

KT Winner

This week's winner of Aleece's 20-pack KT Jelly Roll is Carol Feye. Please email us at lynne@ktquilts.com to claim your goodies.

Traveling with Great Helpers

Our oldest grandaughter, Aleece, accompanied Robert and I on our latest KT trip. Aleece was in that last-week-before-school-so-there's-no-day-camp dead zone and usually comes to stay with us. We look forward to her helping in the store and watching what her latest crafting craze is from adding rhinestones to flip flops to painting a t-shirt to stitching up bags for her friends from the scraps the retreaters left. She loves to create and I love to encourage it! A trip to Hobby Lobby or Michael's is always on the agenda, as well. This year, I happened to have a working trip that week, so Aleece was naturally going to come along and help. When we were loading the car, she told Grampa "You know, Gramma and I can probably handle this ourselves if you need to stay home and work." Really??? He told her if she could load the car by herself, it was a deal. Needless to say, the large suitcases filled with quilts outweighed her, so Aleece decided Grampa was a vital part of the trip. I later found out the main reason she wanted to come with me alone was so she could sit in the front seat! Until she can help drive, Grampa's coming along, too.

Our first stop was at the Kankakee Quiltmakers of IL guild meeting where we shared quilts and stories in a trunk show. Aleece had a great time holding quilts, selling KT product and counting the money. The glasses were a Claire's purchase to make her look cool and smart. Note the t-shirt!

The next day, a dozen or so quilters started on their 30-Something quilts, using our unique layered patchwork technique. Here's a peek at some of the wonderful color combos in progress.
Classic KT red/tan/navy - gotta love it!
Adore these black/white/gold stars. Check out the way the shirting stripe circles the block. So cool!

The corner white stripe squares are cut on the bias so they won't unravel, then layered/stitched on top of the background square. I makes the block assembly so easy but looks so totally amazing!
Such cheery stars in shades of purples and plums.
The whole bunch of quilters with a whole bunch of stars! Excellent job, ladies!
When our class was over and good-byes were said, we were on the road again to Wabash, IN. Cheryl Ross, owner of Heaven on Earth Quilt Shop, hosted a lovely day in Roann, IN at the Community Center. I shared my quilts with the ladies, we were treated to a delicious chicken dinner (with special cupcakes for Aleece's birthday!) and a Crazy for Pillows workshop in the afternoon.
Aleece had alot of fun visiting with the quilters and offering advice on my layered patchwork method.

Here I am doing what I did most of the afternoon - chat and sign books. My favorite part of a workshop!
We headed back to Kansas Saturday evening in hopes of making it to Kansas City in time for a special dinner on Sunday for Aleece's REAL birthday with her parents. Her breakdown of the week? Four states in 5 days; 4 nights in motels with 4 really fun pools/hot tubs; really nice ladies that wanted to constantly touch her curly hair; getting to eat anywhere she wanted; listening to an awesome book in the car; getting paid for being such great help. Sounds like a good trip to me, too!

I'll be gone most of next week to a retreat with  other designers so I'll get to sew. Wahoo! So check in September 1st-ish for all the latest KT news and happenings. Tell me about your favorite retreat experiences to win a bag of Heartfelt scraps I found when rearranging my sewing area. My find is your gain! Have a great end of your summer.

  2. I haven't been to an official retreat but a couple friends and I have attended a big quilt show and taken some classes for a couple days. What's not to love about that?

  3. My favorite retreat experience was doing a demo for the retreated. It was SO rewarding to see the results and the enthusiasm that they had. It made all the hard prep work worth it!

  9. I go on a quilt retreat annually with a group of friends. It is always a wonderful fun time with lots of fun and laughter, great food and yes lots of patching does get achieved. We all enjoy 3 days of full on sewing with no interruptions from family and all the other distractions that seem to occur at home.

  16. I would love to go to a retreat, have never been. The closest thing would be the trip to Paducah each year. Thanks for the giveaway.

  17. I'm lucky to go to 2 retreats each year with my quilting group. One is an organized project and the other is free sewing! There's always too much food, lots of laughter and they both go by way too fast.

  18. Here in Northern Michigan my guild holds a retreat the first weekend of hunting ... the motto is "The guys go hunting, the girls go quilting". It's a blast (no pun intended) and well attended every year. 24 hour a day stitching, friendship, laughter and great eats ... perfect combination for a weekend! A bang of your scraps would be perfect to work on during this upcoming event! Thanks for the opportunity! Linda

  21. Every August my guild holds Quilt Camp at a local conference center - "getting away without going away". Three days of fun, food, and laughter, sewing from 8:30 in the morning until as late as you can still sew a straight line. Love your fabrics, even the scraps!

  22. I attend 3 retreats a year that are put on by a wonderful lady that runs a local quilt shop. 4 days of fun filled sewing, chatting, eating and inspiration.......and no guilt feelings that I should be doing laundry or cooking or other household chores!! Pure Bliss!!

  23. I went on a retreat last summer ... out in the middle of nothing but cornfields in central Illinois. I thought it would be boring, out there in the middle of cornfields, but it was the best retreat ever. It was so quiet and peaceful ... and the fabulous eats were icing on the cake (pun intended).

  24. If only I could tell you about a fun retreat, but sad to say, I've never had the fun pleasure of going to one. I have enjoyed them by reading blogs. I wish I was your granddaughter, what a great helper she was. Thanks.

    Thanks!

  26. I absolutely LOVE our group retreat each August. We have it at a wonderful retreat center where the ladies prepare all the meals from scratch. This year on our last night (after sewing late into the evening), most of us stayed up late to watch the meteor shower. Such a special time with the ladies sitting under the stars, telling stories, laughing, and chasing off the local raccoon who kept trying to join us! It was a nice way to end our wonderful retreat.

  27. Not counting the food (lol!), my favorite part of a retreat is catching up with friends, lots of giggles, and sewing for hours on end!

  28. I've attended one retreat and it was at a camp just outside of my hometown. The building we were in was surrounded by trees and it was as if we were in the woods. It made for a cozy atmosphere to quilt instead of wanting to go outside and see the scenery. Wonderful ladies who get together twice a year at various locations.

  34. Besides the awesome Bloody Caesars my friend made, I'd have to say my most memorable retreat moment was actually being able to sew a zipper in the group project!!! I actually impressed myself! I am a quilter, not a sew-er! ;-D

  35. I've never been to a retreat but I'm sure it is fun to be able to sit and sew undisturbed. Would enjoy a bag of your beautiful scraps!

  37. I have been going to an annual retreat for nine years now, and the best thing is to meet up with old friends and new. Sewing all day without interruptions is the best. The Four H camp we stay at is a great facility and has the best food. Love it.

  38. My favorite thing at a quilt retreat is to meet the ladies and see all the different things they are working on

  39. My favorite retreat is to June Lake, Ca. with Bari of Bareroots and Cheri Payne. Such a wonderful place for a retreat. Love the great designs and of course the scenery.

  41. I haven't tried a quilt retreat but love shop hops! And guild meetings like the one you came to, Lynne. I've been experimenting with layered patchwork since you were here. Wish I had attended your class the next day. I'd probably be happier with my results!

  42. Although we don't do it anymore we used to rent an officer's house at historic Fort Worden and set up at the huge dining room table and sew away to our hearts content, cook and talk. what fun!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love quilting retreats! I love to quilt without interruption from daily life, with the bonus of being with friends and making new ones. And don't forget the food! it's always the best.

  44. I was at "camp" for the last three days. Eight friends sewing at our local quilt shop. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday, so we could let our hair down and have lots of fun! My bestie (manager of the shop) arranged a scavenger hunt. So much laughing trying to figure out the clues and then find the fabric which held the next clue. We had so much fun sharing ideas, shopping for fabric, completing projects, collecting prizes and admiring each other's work. We were all sad to return to normal life today.

  45. I have only been on one "retreat" with 4 of my friends - get away to shop and sew! thank you!

  46. Going on retreat with friends is great fun. Lots of laughing, sewing and just having fun. Shopping at new quilt shops is great too.

  47. Piecemakers Guild retreats are the best. Held in a church campsite on a state lake is a "pieceful" spot for sure. Always a crowd of talent to share and relate with.

  48. I do a retreat with my quilting buddies at least twice a year at a friend's cabin. Friendship, food, laughter, tears, sharing- every time is a new experience depending on what is going on at our lives at the time. What's not to love!!!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've never been on a retreat, but one time when my quilting group had an afternoon "jelly roll race" planned, we brought snacks to sustain us during the marathon of sewing, including a big chocolate cake! That was awesome!!
