Row X Row Experience
This is Kansas Troubles Quilt Shop's first year with the Row x Row Experience. We've enjoyed seeing lots of new faces and seeing all the beautiful rows that have been coming through this summer. Just a week ago, Wendy Hanus of Salina, Kansas stopped in to show us her completed Row X Row quilt. For being first, she won a KT fat quarter bundle. Congrats to Wendy! Thanks for sharing your quilt with us.

I'm afraid my row of country windmills (upper left row) is a bit dark for the rest of Wendy's quilt. Thanks for including KT fabrics in your wonderful quilt! |
Up North
Robert was taking care of the store this week so my second favorite travel buddy, 14-yr-old grandson Cooper, came with me to Michigan. We splashed it up at Zehnder's waterpark in Frankenmuth, MI, then went to
play work with the quilters from Pieces and Patches Quilt Guild in Jackson, MI. What a delightful group of ladies! They stitched up a storm - and many of them finished!- their Clara's Garden Fresh Picked runners.

This was Cooper's idea of a self portrait. Teenage humor? |

We traveled on to Pinconning, MI to my new favorite quilt shop, Bittersweet. Owner, Tina Bauer, has turned a quaint old church into a quilter's paradise with a wonderful mix of fabric, antiques and collectibles to warm your heart. She and her staff went above and beyond to make Coop and I feel welcome, insisting Cooper use her retreat space to take a nap or just hang out and use the wifi. Really? A nap? He was supposed to be working! :) After six days (and a few long nights) on the road, we arrived home in Kansas to triple digit heat. I think we were both ready to move to Michigan!
Sharing
Terry Schloss from the Oshkosh Quilt Guild shared her winnings at their local quilt show. She won 3rd place for her Seedlings pillow sleeve (a project she made in my workshop while there earlier this summer) only because her fabulous 3/8" hex mini quilt took 1st place with rave reviews. I would say so! It's stunning! Thanks for sharing your pictures, Terry. And congratulations on being a two-time winner.

KT Giveaway
This week's giveaway is Cooper's favorite KT product, our Layers of Love book with his Cooper's Crossing quilt. A Layer Cake and Jelly Roll play together nicely to create an intricate looking block and border simply using our Layered Patchwork technique. Now that Cooper's learned all about this method, he's ready to make a quilt of his own! He was even signing books in MI. What a hoot!
Comment here about your summer musings to win a Layers of Love book. I'll check back in next week.
What a fun trip. And might I add that your grandson is a very nice looking young man. He's going to be a real heart-breaker. Can't wait to see his quilt :-)
ReplyDeleteLOL.........always interesting travelling with a teenager............
ReplyDeletewell it is winter here.........July was pretty good........some school holidays, a sewing retreat and a blog meet..........life was pretty good.......some freezing cold weather so I sure feel like we have had winter...........enjoy your trip and travel safe.............

I love the border on that quilt. I like those tricky bindings! I am really making an effort to reduce my scraps this summer. I spend days cutting and sewed it up in NO time at all. Now I need to quilt 4 large quilts. Two of them have been waiting for quite a few years, I did quilt and bing 6 small quilts and tablerunners. Need to use up some stash to make room for more. Off for vacation with a bag of items that need binding sewn down.....
ReplyDeleteCooper's Crossing is a very nice quilt. How fun to travel with your grandson. I am sure many special memories were made.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Cheryl! So lovely to spend time with your grandson, I have two granddaughters and love anytime I get with them. Coopers Crossing is another fabulous designxxx
ReplyDeleteBusy with our local county fair. Trying to keep the garden and plants from wilting in our unusual heat. I can't wait for cooler fall weather. Love Cooper's Crossing.
ReplyDeleteI love hearing about your trip. It is wonderful getting to spend time with grandkids in the summer. Only the summers just keep getting shorter and shorter. As always, I love the fabrics in this quilt. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteRoad trips are so much fun, and I think it's awesome Cooper went along with you! Summer musings...it is hot over here in Japan. But isn't it elsewhere? :)
ReplyDeleteHappy trails to you Lynne for the rest of the summer!
ReplyDeleteSummer is just about over as it's time to think about heading back to school. Lots of family, friends, and quilting fun this summer.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful trip with your grandson. I love it when I have my grandchildren come help me. My summer musing is remembering great road trips I have done with family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a special time with your grandson. Lucky you. Cooper's quilt is awesome. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeletethat is a beautiful quilt! Summer - always rough for me a Northerner trapped in Georgia humidity! Just got back into sewing after 30 years - it is so satisfying - I did not realize how much I missed handwork
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time with Cooper. I have had fun this summer doing a weekly HST challenge with my mom and 3 sisters. I finished my top this last weekend. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI love getting my grandchildren to help me with projects. Summer is too short for all of those projects!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time with Cooper! We just got back from a long weekend at Jekyll Island and I'm ready to get back on my regular schedule!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun time! I am working on some Michigan Row by Rows and enjoying the nice weather this summer!
ReplyDeleteNothing like a road trip to bond with the grand kids!
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt. I am visiting with my grand children as well this summer. Have a good one with Cooper he will never forget the adventures he has with you.
ReplyDeleteI know it's hot in Kansas, but the hottest temps we've had in Mich probably occurred while you and Cooper were here. Not kidding! Now it's back to highs in the upper 70's. (Not typical for us). A friend's mother told me about that quilt shop in Pinconning, and now that you have given it a strong endorsement, i must take a road trip over there!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to win your book and try these quilts.
ReplyDeleteAs always, enjoyed your blog a lot. Your quilts are so inspiring. I also had some granddaughter time this past month. It's great whether it's grandson or granddaughter, isn't it. Thanks for a great blog to start my morning
ReplyDeleteCooper's quilt looks very interesting. I would love to win your book.
ReplyDeleteWe've finally had a break from the hot weather but dare I say it is starting now to feel a bit like Autumn. Wonderful that you and Cooper have such a good time together.
ReplyDeleteI love the summer because my grand daughter gets to spend a lot of time with me. School starts tomorrow so I'm limited to weekends now.
ReplyDeleteHow fun that Cooper has an interest in quilts! I am in panic mode now that the calendar has turned to August. I had so many plans for redoing my flower beds and adding some new landscaping. None of that happened, of course, but maybe it's not too late???
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great trip with Coop! And, you should be very proud. He sounds like an amazing young man.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt. Would love to win the book to make it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis summer was just too short and too hot!

Looks like you're having a lot of fun with your grandson! I really like the Cooper's Crossing quilt. I especially like the multicolour squiggly line that runs next to the green border. It really adds to the quilt. Sharon B.

The 'squiggly line" in the border is merely a Honey Bun strips sewn across a half square triangle - so easy!
DeleteEnvy your time with Cooper. Our grand children are too old, and our great grandchildren are too young/too far away. Summer musings: Actually work/play on daughter's Red and Green Christmas Quilt.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all you have done for quilting all these years.
I'm working on my PHDs this summer. I have a few to complete plus two baby quilts to start. If only I didn't work full time!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Layers of Love book is in my library and I've tried your method after the tutorial I saw on You Tube. Quick and easy tablerunner made as a gift.
ReplyDeleteI'm ready for summer to come back, I'm British and we've had about a week of it so far. The last couple of weeks have been cold and wet though.

I wonder if I am REALLY a quilter. I just make charity quilts for kids, not the big fancy pretty ones I see on the internet and in quilt stores. My fabrics are mostly rummage sale and flea market finds, and I don't have a long arm so I just putter with my little Singer. Still, I bought the Loose Change book this summer because I read your blog and made the Patriotic Pennies runner. It didn't come together exactly as yours does, but I like it so much because it reminds me of the fall my husband and his brothers gathered to help their parents harvest because their father was ill. I'm a city girl. I thought it was the most wonderful week! I had a few-month-old baby that I was nursing. My mother-in-law and I enjoyed each other cooking, doing dishes and playing with Little Tim. I used corn-colored fabric and I imagine the red strips are the tractors and wagons the guys were using for the harvest. Thanks for offering me the opportunity to share my musings!
ReplyDeleteI remember traveling with teenagers and getting to see a totally different perspective of what's happening. I love how he started signing books that's a teenager for you. Enjoy the rest of this Kansas summer. Rina
ReplyDeleteWe had our granddaughter here for 45 days this summer, she isn't a teen, but she is 10 going on to 16. LOL. Love your blog post and I would love to try the layered quilting. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHow can the days be longer in summer and yet I get less done?
ReplyDeleteTraveling with your grandson, I'm jealous! Can't wait for mine to come and stay summers with us! Hate the summer heat and humidity, but it's great for sewing!!!!
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked our state ... LOVE Michigan, especially the summers ... no place more beautiful on earth!! Hope you come back for a visit to Traverse City ... would love to host you and Cooper!! Linda
ReplyDeleteI received my winnings ( box of scraps) last week. I was so excited to add these fabrics to my hexi quilt. Now I have a great store of hexies to make and stitch together. Thank you for your kindness.
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good trip with Cooper. Looking forward to seeing his first quilt! I'm getting ready to go on retreat this month with my dear quilting pals. We're all pretty excited about it!
ReplyDeleteWe just returned from a vacation visiting Yellowstone, Grand Tetons and several other national and state parks. Now I want to lock myself in my sewing room for a week or two.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte
LOVE that you and Cooper went on a road trip! My first grandbaby girl is due in a couple weeks and I can not wait to quilt with her someday! For now, sewing away the weekend while hubby is out of town!
