Happy 4th of July!

Robert and I have been on the road so much this spring that a long holiday weekend was just what we needed to catch up on some chores around the house. Number one on the list was weeding our stone paver walkway and dead heading flowers. Everything was so overgrown this year from the good rains, it was like hacking thru a jungle trying to carrying groceries into the house!  Now, we have a civilized path again. (And a few dozen chigger bites in unmentionable places for the effort.)

Number two was finishing the chalk board in my studio. Once upon a time, my studio space was part of the original screened-in porch that spanned the whole front of the cabin. We loved spending time out there, but often had to clean the dust & dirt from the south 40 off the furniture before we could enjoy it. After enclosing half of it for my studio for year round use, we installed a window for air circulation opening onto the remaining porch. Weeeelllll.... after finally knocking out a wall and  enclosing the other part of the porch as part of the house last year, I had an odd hole in my wall from an unneeded window. I decided to make the best of it and add a chalkboard/inspiration wall. Dad dug around and found a large metal display piece that fit perfectly. A little lot of chalkboard paint and trim and "Ta-da!".  I don't have all my stuff up yet, but I have plenty of room for inspiration now.

Number three on the list was changing out the decor upstairs in the retreat space from spring bunnies and flowers to all things red, white & blue. Here are a couple of pictures celebrating summer.

Since it's my birthday today, I have a lunch date so I'll make this short. Here's wishing all of you a happy summer of stitching. I hope to work on a patriotic quilt just for me.  What are your quilting plans for the summer?

Comment here to win a six pack of red/tan/navy fat quarters for your summer holiday sewing. See you next week!

  1. Happy birthday! Mine was Sunday.

My sewing plans for summer are to get two BOMs I started last year to the "flimsy top" stage. I just have to do the December block, cut the setting pieces and sew them together, so there isn't much left to do on them. I hate when I get sidetracked away from a project like I did with these!

  3. Happy Birthday toyou, Lynn! I always wished my birthday would be in summer instead of winter and it's really ridicilous that everyone in my family (mom, dad and my brother and even my cats!) has her/his birthday in summer just not me, lol!
Don't have a lot of quilting plans for the summer but I hope you get at least one quit from my UFO pile done and make at least one x-mas gift now (and not one day before I have to give it away;-)
    Enjoy your lunch date!

  5. Best wishes on your birthday. My cousin's birthday is July 4th and as a kid I was jealous of him because he got fireworks and cookouts on his birthday and I didn't on my January 25th birthdate.

  20. Right now I am hand quilting a new scrappy quilt for my bed but that may soon take a back seat to a baby quilt when we find out if it will be pink or blue. I have so many things I want to work on, but so little time! Thank you for a chance to win and Happy Birthday! ! !

  21. Happy Birthday! I sure don't deserve to win any of your beautiful fabric and I'll tell you why. I came across you in my early years of quilting, when I knew nothing about fabric manufactures and certainly not designers. So I picked out a Mariners compass pattern maybe 10 years ago and went to a fabric store and picked out fabric in red, navy and light tan. After I was home, I noticed Kansas on one of the selvages and wouldn't you know it, all of my fabrics said Kansas Troubles. I now live in Canada, but I thought that was neat because my mom is from central Kansas. I looked up your town on a map and I've followed you ever since!! I have a huge hoard of Kansas Troubles in my fabric cabinet and I hate to cut into them ever! I choose to hoard them, I guess. And about that first KT fabric, its still fully in tact and I should maybe get at it! Thanks for this chance and enjoy your summer!!

  25. Happy birthday!! I would love to be entered in the draw as my winter bed quilt made of Kansas troubles fabrics is starting to look very shabby now and needs some repair work. So I really need a new quilt and could make very good use of some fat quarters, and I will be celebrating my birthday next week..

  31. Happy Birthday Blessings, Lynne! You share my grandmother's birthday. She lives about 4 hours south of you in Oklahoma. :) Great job on the yard work, it looks very nice. 33. Happy Birthday, Lynne. I hope you had a great, fun and restful day. As far as my summer quilting plans go, I am still striving to finish a few UFOs. It's hard to find time in the summer to quilt, because there is so much to do outdoors. But if I can get a couple more UFOs finished, I will be able to work on 1 or 2 charity quilts, then I want to sew a Christmas quilt. My first holiday quilt, and I'm eager to get to it.

  52. Your chalkboard is sure to be a great place for your inspiration pieces.
My summer plans include yard work and quilting but I think the plans have been way laid by the inherited addition of a "new" 10 yr old dog. He's both sweet and contankerous! My 2 goldens are trying to welcome him but the poor boy has never been too socialized and doesn't know what to think of it. We hope to win him around.
