Moda Blockheads Week #7

Moda Blockheads Question of the Week:

What's your favorite ruler? Do you have a preferred brand? Size?

I like Olfa rulers with their skinny black lines and sharp 1/8" markings. They're clear acrylic to easily see thru for use with any color fabric. I think I have virtually every size they make! Of course, I like our KT rulers & templates, too, for simple projects made quickly. Check them out at KT-RulersTemplates.

Moda Blockheads Block #7

We're into our second round of blocks so I thought I'd share something a little different. I love basket blocks! You'll see over the coming weeks, some of my fellow designers love them, too - in all shapes, sizes and techniques. I hope you'll enjoy my Penny Basket block mixing traditional & layered piecing with some fusible applique for a whimsical look. I can't wait to see what you do for your block. See you on FB. NOTE there are 2 pages to the instructions this week. Click on the highlighted link below.

Kathy & Joy chose similar fabrics this week to make their Penny Baskets. What will you choose?

Hey, Jo, your new book looks like so much fun! It's on my must have list. Go to Jo's blog for more information.

  1. Hi Lynne! Clicking on the red hyperlink doesn't work, but copying and pasting the link under it into the browser does.

  7. I love this little basket!! And, I will not repeat what I have already read above, so I will try the copy and paste thing too. I use only one ruler. Optima 12 1/2". I like to spend all my money on fabric!

  8. Cute basket! I love the Olfa frosted rulers and have several sizes: 12 1/2, 9 1/2, 6 1/2, and the 18 by 6 inch. The little lines are great and the tint is easy to read on dark and light fabrics.

  9. I have a number of different brand rulers. My favorite overall is Creative Grids rulers. They have the no-slide
grips made into the backs. I also love my Marti Michelle rulers. I will try some of the ones listed in the comments.

  10. My favorite rulers have become Creative Grids rulers. Because they stay in place and don't slide when cutting and they are easy to see through to the fabric!

  13. My current favorite rulers are Creative Grids. The one I use the most is the 6 1/2" square. They are easy to see through and do not seem to slide as much as some other rulers I have tried. Love the basket block!

  14. Lynn, could you please publish a traditional method also for your blocks, not everyone does your layered method.

  15. My favorite ruler is Fons and Porter 8 x 14. I have one in my class bag and one upstairs and one downstairs! My next favorite is the raised 6 1/2 inch ruler for squaring up!

  16. For the question of the week, I have a few favorites. I use primarily Creative Grids. I love the 1/8" rulers recommended a couple of weeks ago. Bought 3 of them and has made all the difference. My favorite one right now is the 3 X 7. ( So that's my answer for the week) I also have a 6.5" X 24.5" Creative Grids ruler that I love because 1) I have only ever made 6.5" quilt blocks and 2) it covers the folded width of a yard of fabric. Perfect! I love my Creative Grids 6.5" square ruler and my Creative Grids 2.5" square ruler. Would love to see an 1/8" ruler in the 2.5 square size.

  20. It is hard to pick a favorite ruler, like saying you like one of your kids more than the other!!! However, love all Creative Grid rulers, especially the new ones Lisa designed with the 1/8" lines, and I cannot leave out BlocLoc rulers for half square triangles. A must have!

  21. I am having trouble with direction number 9 on the penny basket. What are we gluing? Do we leave a raw edge? Thanks
