Pillow Talk Blog Hop Winners Announced!

Three pairs of geese visited the pond this weekend, checking out the location for spring nesting. It's a hopeful sign that warmer weather is just around the corner.

Thanks to all the quilters who commented during the Moda Pillow Talk Blog Hop. I was delighted that so many visited all the designers throughout the month. It was great peeking into the bedrooms and minds of all these lovely ladies.

The KT giveaway is a Perennials fat 1/8 bundle, which goes to Wendy from Florence, MT. Congrats Wendy! Please send your mailing address and I'll get Robert to wrap it up and ship it out for you. Alas,it just didn't seem right that so many stopped by and only one person won, so we found a couple more items to giveaway - wahoo! Sandy G with her Kansas soldier sons wins a Perennials Layer Cake - that should make getting started on her pillows a little easier. And Clydine, whose "head hits the pillow and she's out like a light" wins a Perennials charm pack and pattern! Congratulations to all the winners. Hope to see you checking back in the future for more fun.

I'm always amazed at how quickly odds and ends pile up around here, year after year, one fabric line after the next. When I asked Robert to build yet another set of shelves for storage, his solution was "just give it away!". For once, I'll take his advice, clean out some of the old and get a little more organized. Announcing - Charming Thursdays! You'll have a chance to win a KT charm pack - from the first collection of KT fabric (Stitches on the Oregon Trail) to the very latest - one a week over the next 36 weeks. At the end, there will be a GIGANTIC giveaway of the entire history of KT charm squares - one of every KT fabric printed so far - more than 1200 5" squares! So check in on Thursdays - winners announced on Sunday/Monday.

More good stuff is being uncovered every week, so stay tuned and help me get the clutter under control. What's your favorite tip for organizing/storing small scraps of fabric? It drives me nuts!

  1. Congratulations to the winners!
I can't wait for nicer weather and walks to the bird sanctuaries.
We have a few on salt water ponds, so love going in the spring when the babies are born.

  2. Oh my gosh! You are so generous and kind! I don't have many scraps since I just started quilting in August, but I have plans to make fabric bins with different color fabrics and then store scraps by color. For Noe, I just have "warms," "cools," and "neutrals. Works for me. :)

  3. Congrats to the winners. I cut my scraps up into sizes (1-4" squares) or strips & store them in baskets or plastic shoe boxes until I get enough to make a quilt.

    Enjoy your day~Becky

  4. I have a bin for each color and the pieces must go in ironed and flat..no messy jumble lol!

  5. Congratulations to the winners! The Blog Hop was a lot of fun! We had to pare down and organize before selling our home a year ago and retiring to a new city - I don't envy you having to de-clutter, Lynne! I am lucky enough to have an antique, 56-drawer chest with drawers that can be re-positioned in numerous configurations. I store all my charm squares and jelly rolls in these drawers. Each drawer has a little label slot on the front so I know what's in them. Happy sorting!
    Cheers!

  6. I have the same problem, so I'm waiting to hear what others share about organizing their scraps & stash!

  7. Not much organization here. I try to keep scraps separated by designer in Rubbermaid boxes, and larger cuts in Elfa drawers. However, it seems I tend to toss extra squares, strips, triangles and such together in boxes expecting some day to find a completed quilt top appear. Thanks everso for the generous giveaways.

  8. Wow Lynne, as always I'm excited about this latest give away! I think we're all ready for spring but the forecast for Vancouver Wa is snow and apparently we might get quite a bit! As for storing and organizing, I too use canvas baskets to store my scraps and strips and they sit on a book shelf. I tend to organize mine by seasons or projects. When they get too full I go through them and if I haven't touched them in over a year they get donated to causes such as Project Linus. Which then leaves me more room to add more scraps! Have a great week!

  9. I love having my scraps organized by color - then when I need that perfect piece for whatever project I'm working on, it is right there. I hate wasting a ton of time rooting around looking for a piece - much easier to stay a bit organized. I use the tall plastic four/five drawer wheeled units that fit right under my cutting table or move around if I need them to. Works great! - Marlene

  10. I began quilting about 5 years ago but just discovered KT fabric about 1-1/2 years ago and have just fallen in love with it. Our local quilt shop just started a KT Stash club and I'm so excited to be a part of it. I don't have a very large collection of KT fabric yet but it all fits together so well that I've been storing it by color. Love the Perennial line.

  11. I haven't finished organizing my scraps yet, but here's the plan: triangles in one box (all those triangles we cut off when sewing on a square etc), crumbs in another; strings are close to the cutting table, so when squaring up my fabrics before cutting, I cut a string for that box. Jelly strips get there own place and charms theirs. FQ have two shelves in the cabinet and anything smaller than a fq but larger than a crumb will get cut with my GO if I ever get that far...I have an apple core quilt I want to make...

  12. congrats to the lucky winners :) I'll definately be visiting on Thursdays. I'm in the process of moving my sewing room in to a bigger space (as the nest has emptied at last!) and I am cutting up all scraps in to 2.5 inch strips...any leftover "usable" scraps are going in to their own bin. Thanks for sharing the pic of the geese, they're lovely - and have a grand day

  14. Congratulations to the winners. I started following your blog just before the blog hop. I enjoy what you share and plan to continue to follow it in the future. Of course the give-aways are an added incentive but I do enjoy hearing about what you are working on. Love your picture of the geese. I live in NE and near the migration route of the sandhill cranes which will be coming through soon. If anyone has suggestions for storing fabric when you have minimal space, I'm interested.

  15. Organizing...? what's that?! LOL I look forward to reading everyone's tips-- 'cause I need them badly! :-)
Congratulations to the winners! And it's really exciting to think that we have a chance to win every Thursday for the next 36 weeks!! And, oh my goodness--- whoever the lucky person is who wins the final GRAND prize-- will surely feel like they won the lottery! I can't even imagine that many charms!! :-) NEAT! And, thanks so much! :-)

  16. I love the ArtBin Satchels...they stack up nicely and are great for storing scraps or keeping blocks in when doing a project. How exciting to have so many giveaways coming up with Kansas Troubles fabrics....they are my most favorite of all. I have even gotten a friend in CO hooked on them now lol.

  17. Some scraps are cut and placed in a plastic drawer according to the width of the strip. The smallest pieces are stored in a plastic bag to use in stuffing pet beds. I hate to throw them away, but know that I won't use the small pieces. Too many large pieces waiting to become quilts. Take care!

  18. Congrats to the winners! I love having scraps because I enjoy making scrape quilts, especially KT ones. Thanks for the great KT giveaways!

  19. I'm happy for the lucky winners. I keep my scraps in a vinyl (see through) zippered blanket bag. That way I can see what I have at all times. I use my scraps for applique also.

  20. Ooohh, I, too, need to get my scraps figured out ;-} What I have been doing just isn't working, I've left the scraps folded within the larger pieces. Great? nnooo! I think it'd be easier to have two clear plastic containers where I add small leftover pieces: one container for cool-tone fabrics, the other warm tones. Then, just maybe I'd finally make scappy quilts with enough on-hand scappy fabrics :-D Reads good, so it's gotta work :)

  21. well, actually I dont store small scraps of fabric. I give them to a quilter friend of mine who makes doggy pillows out of them and takes them to the animal shelter.

  22. I am a new KT lover and starting a new part of my sewing room devoted to the stash of these beautiful fabrics. I even went to a quilt show a couple of weeks ago and picked up some of the new Perrinal line to make a purse with the charms. Looking forward to adding additional lines.

  23. GREAT GEESE PHOTO!
GIVEAWAYS OF KT ALWAYS SOUND GREAT!
I'M A BEGINNER QUILTER, SO I PROBABLY DON'T HAVE THE STASH SOME OF YOU DO. SO FAR I'VE JUST USED THE LARGE ZIP-LOC BAGS, IN A LARGER PLASTIC BIN,IF CAREFULLY CLOSED,YOU CAN WHISK RIGHT THROUGH THEM TO FIND JUST THE RIGHT LITTLE PIECE OF RED,FOR EXAMPLE.
STILL I'M JEALOUS OF CANDACE'S ANTIQUE CHEST!
    THANKS FOR SHARING!

  24. HaHaHa, just ask your husband what to do with the small scraps, bet his advice is similar to the shelf question :) I save my scraps in a cute bag near my machine and every so often when the bag gets full, I mail the contents to my Mom. She and my aunt have a great time playing with the scraps as they have a passion for doll size quilts. That frees me up to indulge in a little shopping therapy, there are SO many lovely fabrics out there now, including yours!

  25. from Cindy Ben:
I understand about wanting new/additional storage - it's amazing how quickly little pieces (and not so little...) of fabric become a bigger stash than you are aware! I too am newer to the KT line. I've been collecting bits over the past two years or so. One set is more lovely than the next. Thanks for such a wonderful selection, time and time again.

  26. I donate my small scraps to the local kindy (you might call it pre school?) where the kids get the joy of fabric and gluing it on to things making creations! Passing creativity to the next generation.

  27. Thank You so very much Lynne! Thank you ladies for your sincere congratulations!
I am excited to make the pillows that will go to my sons! I am sure they will appreciate the contextural elements of this special fabric.
Hope to send you all a picture.
    Thank you again, Lynne.
Good Luck Ladies on Charming Thursdays!
I am looking forward to your Blog Lynne and seeing all your names ladies as you post!
Sorry, I cannot offer any organization tips to this post, my husband will vouch for me on that one.

  28. Lynn-I loved the pillow talk blog hop. It was so much fun to learn about all the designers and how they work. It gives me a new way to look at fabric. My storage tip would be-I cut my scrapes in 21/2" stripes and when I have enough for a new project, they are ready to go. Thanks for sharing your fabric. Carol

  29. Congratulations to the winners!

I try to cut my scraps to useable sizes then organize by size in plastic containers. I'm also starting to collect 1 1/2" squares and 2 1/2" squares as I would like to make a charm quilt or close as I can to a charm quilt, eventually... :-)

  31. We have a pond behind out house and I know it is still frozen and just had another 17 inches of snow thhis past week in MN. No geese yet. What a beautiful picture though. A couple of years ago we finished out basement and most of it is my sewing space. I have a 6 shelf cabinet and 6 big drawers where all my fabrics get stored. The shelves have KT fabrics. I have Christmas in one drawer, misc in another, tools, patterns etc in another, on the other three shelves are irons, thread, rulers, magazines and quilting books. I have never been so happy in my life to have lots of storage space. Plus there are two bedrooms with huge closets with shelves, a bathroom with another big cabinet so if I ever run out of room in the one in my sewing room, I can always use the closets or the bathroom cabinet. i love stash. Also I store alot of fabrics in our condo in FL so in the winter I don't have to drag back and forth as I don't find many shops that carry KT fabs where I live. Sorry for the long comment. On by the way, I would like older KT fabrics that I never have had. ROFLOL
