Merry Christmas from KTQ

Our family Christmas was on Saturday with all the kids and grankids, so Robert and I are looking forward to a quiet day at home alone, eating leftovers and digging out from under our major construction mess at the cabin. I've been cleaning up sheetrock dust for a month instead of decorating for Christmas. So looking forward to feathering my nest again soon. Floors go down in a day or two, then it's DONE, DONE, DONE. With shipping delays and damage on materials, it's been a long, slow process that's lasted months instead of weeks. My New Year's gift is a finished house and no more dust - at least from construction!

We'll be closed December 25-January 1st but stop in after the holidays to check out the store. We'll be rearranging and bringing out some good new stuff, awaiting Clara's Garden fabric. Be sure to have plenty of projects to work on when you're snowed in - really or not.

KT Quilt Contest

It's not too late to submit a quilt for My Favorite KT Quilt Contest. Here's a look at the rules:

1. Make a quilt (or enter an existing quilt) that features any KT pattern using Kansas Troubles or any other Moda designer's fabrics.

2. The quilt must include 1 Moda precut - charm pack, mini charm pack, Layer Cake, Jelly Roll, Honey Bun, Honeycomb or Dessert Roll.

3. Send a photo of your quilt to lynne@ktquilts.com. Entries must be received by midnight December 31, 2014. The 3 finalists will be posted here on Monday January 5, 2015. You will all get to vote on the winner via blog comments through Jan. 10th. Winners will be announced on Jan. 12th.

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway - Day 12

Our giveaway for Day 12 is our brand new Clara's Garden booklet & Seedlings charm pattern. Clara's Garden fabric collection is due in quilt shops next month for a bright beginning to the new year. I love the way the floral prints and rich hues play so well together. This line is in honor of my great-grandmother who was a master gardener and rug hooker. One of the rugs we found in my Gramma's collection was the circular motif, so marrying the floral applique with the illusion of circles was the perfect tribute to an amazing woman. All 5 projects are in our Clara's Garden booklet. 

 

 

Our charm pattern for Clara's Garden is the Seedlings Runner & mini charm pillow sleeve. I've become addicted to making these pillow sleeves to slide on and off of a rectangular lumbar pillow. This shape works best for me when binding or hand-stitching in my comfy chair. I love the convenience of being able to swap out seasonal sleeves in a snap. We have a melon-shaped template available in both sizes coming soon!

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway - Day 11

Our giveaway for Day 11 is a trio of patterns featuring the Paisley Park fabric collection.The great prints and colors of this line make it one of my all-time favorites. The easy layered patchwork makes the projects so easy to make! You'll never cut off star points again with our Perfectly Paisley star lap quilt. Rectangles and squares are cut diagonally to create triangles that are layered and topstitched on a larger background rectangle. Looks difficult, but really, I made it so it can't be that hard!

Prim Pinwheels utilizes a Jelly Roll to make spinning double pinwheels with layered triangles. Who'd guess you started with a precut and 3 fabrics?

Paisley Party is just that - a party in a Jelly Roll! Make 2 runners and a pillow sleeve from one Jelly Roll. Tans stitched together in long strips create the background for some bloomin' paisleys take directly from the fabric print. Assorted dark strips sewn horizontally showcase the beautiful colors of the line. Use any appliques you like, or none at all and let your centerpiece shine! With a few odds and ends of JR strips leftover, I couldn't resist whipping up a pillow sleeve that can be easily changed when the season - or your mood - changes. All three projects are in the pattern. Any JR works!

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway - Day 10

Our giveaway for Day 10 is a duo of new patterns featuring our KT Favorites collection, now arriving in quilt shops. Moda selected 20 of the 39 prints to double up in precuts for our first ever Favorites Layer Cakes, Charms and Jelly Rolls. Our Barn Raising quilt features the KT Five & Dime Ruler to make one simple block with a Layer Cake & Charm that can be arranged a dozen different ways. We give you 4 in the pattern to get you started. My favorite is the Barn Raising setting.

KT Dugout uses a Jelly Roll to good advantage, adding layered triangles to the corners of strips. With almost half tans/half darks in this collection of precuts, it's been fun playing with all the options. You can play, too, with these two patterns to inspire you.

12 Days of Christmas Giveaway - Day 9

Our giveaway for Day 9 is our Layers of Love book. Now is the time to embrace precuts and our layered patchwork technique for fast & simple quilts for everyone in your life. The "Layers" part of the title refers to our unique method of layering squares, triangles and precuts over background squares and topstitching close to the raw edges. This technique not only eliminates bulky seams by simplifying traditional quilt blocks, but creates a fun, dimensional look, as well. The "Love" part is all about the grankids. It was so much fun to design a quilt for each of our 8 grankids with their personalities and hobbies in mind.

One of the favorites is Delainey's Twirls & Swirls. This delightful pinwheel quilt uses just one charm pack plus 2 fabrics for background and border. It's pieced with just one block - a square with 2 different sized triangles stitched on top. In all the classes I've taught, there isn't one color combo that wasn't twirly & swirly!

I love it in classic KT colors, of course, but the brights just make me smile! A charm makes a 72" sq. quilt, but it's easily made smaller for a baby quilt. Add buttons for even more dimension.

I found the reproduction feed sack on a recent trip to market when I stopped to shop in Spring, TX. The handmade pottery bowl's design is made with vintage lace - awesome! I enjoy traveling around the country to visit quilters and quilt shops, but the shopping trips on the side often yield some my greatest finds.

The leaves, the acorns, the changing colors, the nip in the air. It's all so inspiring to me. I always include warm fall tones of pumpkin & brown along with classic KT reds, greens, blues, golds & tans in my fall fabric collections. I found this great metal wreath with clips at Magnolia in Waco, TX. If you watch HGTV like Robert and I do, you've seen Chip and Joanna Gaines in their home remodeling show, Fixer Upper. Magnolia is their home dec/antiques shop. So much good stuff! Check it out if you're ever in the area.

On Day 3 of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, we're looking forward to spring. In Kansas, we had a cold snap early this year, but we've enjoyed some very nice days with temps in the 50's and 60's since. I was lucky enough to be in Florida during the first snowfall, sketching on the beach between teaching at workshops. My kids had just returned home from a week at Disney World and would text us the temperatures each day with not-so-happy emoticons for emphasize. Oh well,....They coulda stayed, too!

Seedlings

Our charm pattern for the Clara's Garden fabric collection is as simple (and addictive) as planting the first seedlings in their little peat pots each spring. We sewed rows of charm squares together, added borders, sandwiched the quilt, then appliqued the melons onto the runner as we quilted it. So fast, so fun, so cool! Add buttons from Hillcreek Designs that blend perfectly with KT fabrics for the finishing touch. We'll have button packs available in December when the patterns are done.

 I loved the charm runner when Lois brought it back and wondered what it would look like done up with a mini charm pack. I think it's the perfect compliment as a pillow sleeve. Same technique, more buttons. Gotta love it! We're working on a template for the melon wedges - large & small - so check back here for more info.
