Happy May Day! (and a KT May Special)

KT Winner

Congrats to our winner of last week's flannels:
BONNIE HILL - Love, Love, Love, and want it all. !!!

Bonnie, you'll be the first on your block to be able to fondle the new KT Country Road flannels. They'll be at your favorite quilt shop in July along with the Flannel Days, Starry Nights booklet, shown last week, and the Country Road booklet, below. Enjoy!

KT May Special

It finally feels like spring here in Kansas. Robert and I have been working in the yard, trimming branches, spreading mulch and rearranging the yard art. If a rusty piece of junk catches my eye - anything from an old farm tool to a vintage sprinkler, to the top of an old wood burning stove- it can be featured in the garden. I say garden generously, since we basically plant each year to feed the bunnies and deer, so there are usually a lot of holes in the landscape after just a few weeks. My solution? Bring in another piece of yard art!

One type of flower that lasts around here is the appliqued kind, like on my U-Pick Flowers charm pattern and Cut Flowers Mini Table Treat. For the month of May, buy the pair of patterns for the price of only one - $6.50 (retail $11.50). That's like buying U-Pick Flowers and getting Cut Flowers FREE! While you're ordering, add the KT Kut-ups for either of these projects to your cart for a quick and easy finish.Click HERE to receive your KT May Special BOGO now!

Country Road Flannel

To visit me, you would need to drive a couple miles on a gravel road, then turn at the windmill and continue down a winding lane leading to my house in the country. We're surrounded by wheat fields and pasture on three sides with a pond out my front door.

The view from my studio windows (see the pair of geese?)

Driving down the dirt roads each day, I envisioned a quilt with roads crossing between fields of golden wheat, bright green soybeans and rich dark tilled soil. I could see in my mind the crooked path that rambled thru the fields to our cabin. The result? The projects in my Country Road booklet featuring KT Country Road flannels - Crossroads and Rambling Road.

Both quilts start with a Layer Cake to provide lots of yummy scrappiness. Add a few fabrics for backgrounds and borders for a soft and cozy quilt anyone would love to snuggle in the country - or the city. Two patterns in one booklet; also available as queen/king size quilts. The Country Road flannel collection and booklet will be arriving in quilt shops this July. But you can win a bundle of flannels now by commenting here about your favorite gardening decor. Are you a traditional gardener with perfect rows of blooms? Or a free spirit with wildflowers growing impulsively amongst your yard art? I'd love to hear from you.

  1. Hubby takes care of the yard here; I don't do much with it. I do have a concrete Scottish Terrier that a friend gave me. It is my favorite piece in the yard.

  2. Because I don’t have much time to dedicate to gardening, although I love it, I tend to choose perennials and lawn ornaments for color. I do have some herbs that I’ve planted to use in the kitchen, but other than that, not much happens here as far as gardening.

  3. I love the Country Roads quilt! I live in California so we are under drought conditions. We took out all our grass and planted drought tolerant plants like Salvias, and Lantanas. They provide beautiful color with little water. I also have purple and white iris and roses. A park bench to sit on while sipping tea and enjoying the sunshine.

  4. Apparently I love a rambling garden. My favorite plants in my gardens would be the red honeysuckle vine, several types of clematis, and my deliciously fragrant climbing rose (which is a thornless variety, to boot!). Thanks for the opportunity to win some of your flannels!

  5. Although I love them, I'm horrible with plants so I stick to mostly hostas with a few annuals thrown in for color. We do have a couple of rusty wagon wheels propped up against the house for interest.

  6. What happens when 2 different type of gardeners live in the same house & both live in the woods? You make garden areas for 1 to mow around but don”t fill the area because he needs to drive through in the fall to collect the leaves. So, yes yard art shows up as that can be moved plus it doesn’t feed the deer.

  7. My garden is a jumbled mix of flowers and yard art! Lots of stars on sticks, birdhouses, & concrete animals & gnomes. I never plan it out, just throw it all together & voila!

  8. I am a pretty jumbled up gardener. I love all flowers and like to mix it up. I just plant where I have room in my planters and I love that "scrappy" look just like in my quilts. Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. Our garden is a hodgepodge of flowers and shrubs and some “ found” items.

  10. I am a slightly structured gardener (and quilter). I love some symmetry and uniformity, but also like to see a bit of the wild side as well!!. Thanks Lynne

  11. I used to love to garden with straight little rows of flowers and veggies, but now I live on the second floor of a condo. I tried container gardening on the balcony but this place is inundated with squirrels, and they ripped up everything that I planted, again and again. I finally had to give up as I was wasting my time. I still miss gardening.

  12. I've learned a lot about deer-resistant gardening since we moved to a wooded area 17 years ago. The most important thing I learned is there is no such thing as deer-resistant gardening! They will eat whatever is there if they are hungry enough. The deer will also stand just beyond the reach of our dogs and wait for them to go inside before snacking on my plants. Perhaps you are right--the safest flowers are the appliqued kind!

    1. So true! Our raised bed garden merely raises the plants to buffet height for easier grazing! Let me know if you ever find a really deer proof plant.

  13. I am a gardener in training having moved recently. I am learning what the deer won't eat and planting that amongst my collection of yard art.

  14. I have always been a scattered gardener- find a plant I like and throw it in! Hmmmm, seems I quilt the same way

  15. My all time favorite garden decor are the five rocks that have each of my five grand kids names engraved on them. I have those rocks placed around one of our many hosta and coral bell beds. Love planting in the dirt almost as much as I love quilting.

  16. My favorite garden decor is an old antique rake set in my yard among my hostas and surrounded by red mulch.

  17. I love flower beds filled with different flowers -- scattered, I guess. Just like I love scrap quilts!

  18. After years of trying to get things to grow in our sandy soil, I gave up and planted hardy grown cover ... takes care of most of the weeds, too. Decor just happens to be the many stones our sons picked up while we were camping in the Adirondacks. Can't wait for your flannel ... its beautiful!

  19. My favorite gardening decor is my hummingbird feeders. We have a lot of hummingbirds and I have 6 feeders. I enjoy watching for them and I also hand feed them! So fun!!!

  20. We have many, many different types of Hosta and bulbs. They look beautiful and are easy to care for.
I love the patterns with gravel roads in mind. I drive one everyday and totally get the design!!!

  21. I love, love, love English cottage gardens. In reality, the ground gets farther away each year so I do my flowers in pots that I set on mulch in the borders. I do have a few hardy roses and my rock collection and a iron pump from the farm where I grew up. I plant whatever appeals to me but always have my Navy bed(blue and gold) and my Patriotic bed (red/white/blue).

  22. My gardening is more your style, I usually just feed the deer and bunnies. I get so excited every spring to plant flowers and shrubs, only to find them nibbled down to the ground by summer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love to plant lots of annuals in pots for color. I have concrete bunnies scattered throughout my flower beds and I have plans to add decorative birdhouses on posts to add color and accent to the yard. A favorite too is a bright yellow wheelbarrow full of plants and a blue bicycle leaning against a tree at the far back.
Love the Rambling Road flannel quilt.

  24. My husband does most of the gardening - and he is fantastic at it. I would have to say a little of both traditional and wildflowers.

  25. As I got older wiskey barrels and planters became my friends. we live in the country and keeping pasture grasses out of my flower beds was impossible, but the pots and barrels are so easy to weed and maintain! :)

  26. I LOVE working in my yard...ALMOST as much as quilting!!! Those flannels sound BEAUTIFUL. I have some bird aplique that I would like to use them with.

  27. I love flowers, esp. those that smell wonderful and attract hummingbirds and butterflies!! I tend to plant wherever there’s a square inch (much like I decorate my house!). My favorite patterns and fabrics are Kansas Troubles. Thank you so much for your wonderful designs!💕

  28. you have an amazing front yard and free animals to enhance the view...your home look very inviting....

  29. Unlike my mother, I don't have a green thumb so I gave up gardening years ago. However, I love birds and so my favorite yard decor are my bird feeders. I would love to live out in the country like you so that I can watch all the wildlife.

  30. I can't do much gardening anymore so my husband plants what we both choose from the nursery. I have mostly animals for yard art and really enjoy my hedgehog!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I also love finding interesting pieces for the garden. The previous owners left a very heavy old iron stove which we dragged to the garden a few years back, it makes me smile. Love the new Crossroads pattern!

  32. I like flowers planted all together so you don't see ground. Love it when they reseed themselves. Love your yard art.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love color everywhere, so I have lots of flowering perennials, and loads of annuals in pots. I switch them around so you never know what you'll see! I love your flannel quilts. I do have a question - the last flannel quilt I made was too heavy (I used a cotton batt) for my mother in law to use. Do you use a batt or leave it out?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love the feel of a flannel quilt with no batting. With our new 108" wide flannel backing, it's even easier. Wish I could add a "feel me" section to the booklet!

  34. I'm somewhere in between, growing roses and privets and then watching the wildflowers and volunteer bulbs sprout up in between.

  35. I guess I would have to be a free spirit. Nothing in my flower beds grow in rows, and I love have solar powered yard art mixed in with the flowers. Thanks!

  36. Love reading the phrase "dirt roads". I still say that when referring to "gravel roads", which is said here in Missouri.

  37. Your garden reminds me of my grandmother's area under a tree in her backyard near the goldfish pond. It, also, had yard art, along with hostas and a few other Hardy perennials.

Love the fabrics and the patterns!

  38. My gardening consists mostly of shrubs and perennials, with bird feeders mixed in, throughout the landscaping around our house. I also have 2 raised beds for vegetables, but the woodchucks think they like my vegetables better than I do! I really like making quilts from flannel as they are so snuggly warm and cozy - especially when they are made with Kansas Troubles flannel! Thanks for offering the flannel bundle.
