New Patterns

I'm finally done with the new patterns that were introduced at market - Plum Perfect and Just a Little Loopy. Whew! Seems like it's taken forever with the holidays to get everything finished. Now it's up to Robert to send them out - along with Collection of Scraps and the new BOM Bird's Eye View - to the quilt shops and distributors that have been waiting very patiently.

I'm really excited about these two projects for Sandhill Plums, mainly because they go together so quickly with precuts. Here's your heads-up to start watching for the Jelly Rolls, Honey Buns and Charm Packs now, because once they hit the shops, they'll go fast. Plum Perfect features a Jelly Roll and Charm Pack - the JR strips are used to frame a center block that I would normally never do since it requires a template, but with a little raw edge applique for the star points, it's all good and simple. The pieced triangle border really isn't pieced at all - we just placed charm squares cut diagonally into triangles on top of the tan border strip and stitched them down. Cool effect with no worries about anything having to fit perfectly. The strippy pieced border with squared-off corners looks difficult to make, but is really a breeze and adds another great effect. I'd say it takes about 8 hours to assemble for this 70" square lap quilt.

The leftover charm triangles are used on a fun pillow to match! Note the scalloped edge on the triangles. I didn't have any charm packs yet when we started this project, so we cut our own with a wavy-edged rotary blade. I really like the softly scalloped decorative edge. Don't be afraid to make your own precuts if they're no longer available.

Just a Little Loopy starts with Charm squares and Honey Bun strips to simplify an already simple block - the rail fence. Who knew by layering a 1 1/2" wide HB strip over a Charm square you'd end up with a perfectly proportioned rail fence? I love it! The loopy part comes in when HB strips are doubled and stitched into the tan border; the loops are buttoned down and create added dimension. After finishing the quilt, I still had a pile of HB strips, so I cut a bunch of loops and stitched them into strips to make a chunky fringed pillow. Still had tan HB strips left, to I added them to the top of a tote bag I was playing with using my prequilted fabric from Cattails & Clover. It only took about an hour to assemble (plus hand stitching the binding). I use it all the time to carry quilts, patterns and misc. stuff back and forth from the KT building to the cabin.

Both of these patterns will be available at your local quilt shop soon and online at ktquilts.com next week - just as soon as my new webpage goes live! So excited, just need to figure it all out.

For today, 2 lucky winners will win one of each of these patterns - just leave a comment on whether or not you like precuts and why between now and Sunday 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday morning.

  1. Your new designs are wonderful.

I like the convenience and fabric selection of pre-cuts, but I don't like the cost.

  2. Interesting question. When they first came out, I totally ignored them. Then so many great patterns with them started appearing and I broke down and did one of them. They do have their purpose. Your new patterns show why! Thank you for the opportunity to win them.

  3. Oooh - lovely. I especially like Plum Perfect. I like precuts when I'm in a hurry - so convenient and there are so many great patterns that use them. Gotta love that. I confess that I generally like to pick and choose my own fabrics though, for a more one-of-a-kind look, so precuts aren't always my first choice... Don't hate me! :-)

  4. I like pre-cuts because they save time. It's also nice to get a lot of prints in the same line without having to buy every print separately! Thanks for the giveaway!

  5. Oh how I love precuts especially jelly rolls! They make piecing a quilt so much faster of course because there is less cutting! Would love to win one of your patterns! I love Kansas Troubles fabric lines because of the colors I am drawn to!

  6. I love the pre-cuts because I can get a little sample of all the prints in the line. Have quite a few layer cakes, charm packs and a jelly roll or two waiting for me to do something with! However, as someone else said, I don't like the cost!

  7. I love precuts because sometimes they are more accurate than my own cutting! lol I absolutely love the pillow!

  8. With precut all is more quick, I see a quilt in pattern and after a few day I have made it, so I love they!
I like your new patterns, simply but with great results.

  11. I'm just using my first precuts. I've always bought small amounts of yardage in the past but for the little quilts I like to make, precuts work really well. My only problem is the pinked edge and remembering if I measured from the out- or in-point. I love the variety I get this way, though. I can try out the different prints and colors to see if I should go back for yardage.

I love the wavy edges on the pillow - really cute!

  12. I like pre-cuts because I get a piece of the entire line. They make quilting fasting because I don't have to think about what pieces of fabric to include in the quilt and my sewing room doesn't get as messy because I am not pulling fabric out of boxes.

  13. I'm not crazy about precuts - it seems I always want a larger piece than what's offered!

  16. These quilts are beautiful! I love precuts because the fabric always matches and I tend to take too much time to make decisions, so precuts solves this for me!

  25. Perfect patterns. Love design and the color contrast!! I have been buying more jelly rolls, layer cakes, and charm packs esp. KT [BG & WM etc.] . The precuts are "easy" on my time and my hands, plus visually I notice that I can "play" with fabric colors and shapes a lot easier in my small sewing space. I hope to return to binding 2 runners, one for the side board and one for the window seat in the kitchen, after I finish packing away Christmas. I used jelly rolls, cs., and fat quarters for them, the placemats, and the table topper. Bought a C&C charm pack and a Moda Bakeshop box w/ C&C in it for a small topper at my local quilt store... a just fun fast project!!!

    Happy New Year!!!

  27. Love, i'm in love with these! Pre cuts are great for all sorts of projects as you've just shown us.Having said that they are a bit messy with their 'dandruff' they leave behind......but hey.... don't sweat the small stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love Just a Little Loopy!! The only pre-cuts that I have used are charms. I like using charms because they are instant gratification for making small quilts. I've got a couple of jelly rolls, but have not ventured to make anything yet :-)

  31. I work full time and and I feel like I never have enough time for all the projects I have swimming around in my head. Working with precuts I can quickly finish a project that looks like I spend weeks completing. It always amazes me how many different ways you can use 2 1/2 inch strips.

  33. I love precuts because you have such a variety and can use a piece of each fabric in that line.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love the precuts because my local quilt shops never stock the complete fabric line (of anyone's fabric line)so I get a nice variety from my scrappy quilts. I also love the fun patterns that are coming out for the precuts; that means I don't have to cut my strips. Love the new patterns! I was fortunate to purchase some of the early relase of your new Sandhill Plums precuts so would love to have a pattern designed for the fabric.

  40. I like pre cuts for multiple reasons...the top being that I can sample every piece in a line. They are also wonderful for scrappy quilts and I especially like your new jelly roll quilt. I have Butterfly Garden pattern and jelly roll to do that one; but haven't gotten to it yet.
Nothing better than a new line of KT fabrics!!!

  41. I love precuts (although not the jelly roll dandruff!) because cutting fabric is my least favorite part of quilting. I have carpel tunnel problems, so grasping that rotary cutter can cause trouble (pain) for me.

    Thanks for the new giveaway!

  42. I love precuts because they mean you can pretty much start sewing. Thanks for the give away!

Thanks for the chance to win one of your new patterns.

  54. Even though I do like mixing and matching fabrics from several lines I do also like pre-cuts for the convenience and accuracy they give. My favourites are charm packs. They are affordable, and they give you a little bit of all the fabric line which is wonderful because most of the shops cannot carry every fabric of every collection. They are teasers but they are also satisfying. Buying a charm pack either gets that collection out of my system, so to speak or hooks me good, to where I am searching for another yard of this one and I need more
of this stripe, cause it makes such a cool binding etc. Great patterns by the way!

    ReplyDelete
  55. I like precuts for when I am in a crunch for time to get something done - gifts etc. I adore your pillow and the new line! thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love precuts, because you get the whole line, they save time, and there are so many quick projects you can make with them.

  60. How clever of you to cut the triangles with a curved blade! Love the look on the pillow! I rally like using precuts, especially charm packs. I get so inspired when I start playing with the different fabrics and always want to get yardage to go with whatever the charm squares lead me to want to create. Really like the patterns and thanks for the chance to win them!

  61. I do like precuts. They provide an opportunity to purchase a little bit of an entire fabric line without making a big investment of time or money. Most of the shops don't purchase the entire line so this is also a chance to see and feel all the pieces. Thanks for the chance to win your new patterns! Love the pillow with the triangles! Have a great weekend!

  68. I like pre-cuts. They make the process quick & easy. Additionally, I often like a pattern photo for both the pattern and the fabrics it is shown in. If the pre-cuts are in those fabrics, YAY!

    ReplyDelete
  69. I love the new patterns and the fact that you played around with the leftovers and created some really beautiful, useful items! I think that is the essence of quilting - dreaming, creating, always looking for that little something that makes your piece unique!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I really like the new patterns

    ReplyDelete
  71. I like precuts when I'm trying to match fabrics. I like collections although I also like going between lines and using the fabric that I have that matches. sometimes I just don't have the energy or brain power to find the go together fabrics like the precuts have. I also like not having to buy a fat quarter or a half yard of 20 different fabrics and then deciding what I will make with the leftovers. Really like the pattern. It looks so interesting. Thanks.

  72. Super way to start the new year. I want To make them ALL. Love the loopy Ideas.

  73. I love precuts for the variety. The only thing that I don't like is not being able to wash them.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Precuts are great because you get a whole line of fabrics at one time. Great variety, fast and fun. The only dislike is how much the shed because of the pinking shear cutting. I still love buying them.

    ReplyDelete
  75. What gorgeous patterns. I like the effect of the strippy pieced border with squared-off corners. Would love to win your patterns. Thanks for the giveaway! Lana D.

  76. Oh how my heart yearns for these two patterns. My Steve thinks all of my quilts are "dark" but I correct him that they are "darkly beautiful" I love precuts as I am not a good cutter in my opinion. They get me to my project right away without my getting frustrated with the cutting.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love the new patterns! Esp the loops with the HB. Precuts make the cutting part (yuck) so much easier so I can get to the fun part - sewing !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I love precuts. I can get a nice coordinated scrappy quilt, without buying yardage except for borders. And having someone else do the cutting for me is a bonus. Thanks for the chance to win your beautiful new patterns.

  79. I LOVE precuts! They're a really quick way to put together a beautiful project-- gives a real scrappy look, because there are so many different fabrics (without having to purchase yards of fabric), but they are also beautifully coordinated in color and pattern--- perfect!!! Thanks for the chance to win the patterns! I SO love them both, but especially PLUM PERFECT!! It IS plum perfect! :-) And I LOVE the pillow made form the leftovers--- great idea!

    ReplyDelete
  84. I love precuts! I like getting all the fabrics in a line so I don't have to choose which ones to use in a quilt.

    ReplyDelete
  85. I use precuts sometimes. I like that they give you some of each fabric in a line. This is especially good when you are shopping over the internet. There are now so many great patterns designed for precuts too. I don't really like the pinked edges though.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Like the previous quilter I love being able to have some of each fabric from a designer's line.
Most shops can't carry them all in yardage, so I love the opportunity to have some of each.
Also I can play around with possible combinations more easily. I love your designs and would love to try the new ones.

  90. I'm a new quilter and am still trying to learn what I like and what I don't. And since I'm new, I'm cost-conscious, so I've been staying away from the pre-cut fabrics due to the cost.

  91. I do like precuts for their time saving ability and the fact that they coordinate so well..i'm weak in that area. But I don't like paying full price for them...I wait till they are on sale...:)

    ReplyDelete
  92. I love precuts. They give a great variety of
fabrics. I also like the fact that you get a
sampling of a fabric line. I love to use charm
    squares.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I like precuts because I am horrible at cutting parallel straight lines. Also because, by the time I am done cutting the fabric, I am ready to put the pattern away for six months or so. I like how I get coordinating fabric, without having to stand at the cutting counter for an hour, and because I am lousy with color. I also like them, because very few quilt shops order an entire line, so they are one of the few ways you can get every fabric in a line. I don't like how much they cost. I have been having some luck finding a few for 30 - 40% off, and I jump on those.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I like precuts. I don't think I've used a lot of precuts. I love your patterns!! Precuts would definitely help a beginner quilter. I do like a scrappy look in quilts.

  100. I love pre-cuts! I have made so many projects with them and always been so pleased. They are especially good when you are in a hurry and don't have the time to try and co-ordinate fabrics. Looking forward to the arrival of Sandhill!

  101. I really love pre-cuts as I am kind of a matchy-matchy gal who loves the look of random and I can get that with pre-cuts. I'm not very good at picking out fabrics that go together, pre-cuts do that for me. Precuts lets me use a whole collection of fabric, most quilt shops don't carry the whole collection. And, I have a hard time getting the cuts as straight as they need to be, pre-cuts do that for me. Lots of reasons to use them. Love anything KT. As a side line, I am making your Chicken Marsala this weekend, can't wait, sounds so yummy. grandmas9@msn.com

  102. I love precuts for many reasons. I do a lot of my fabric buying online, and charm packs are a great way to see what a new line has to offer (kind of like swatches.) Charms, jelly rolls, and honey buns make fast quilts. Layer cakes offer so many options--small pieces of color coordinated prints that can be cut into strips, squares, HST's and more.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Love precuts...I only go looking at yardage when I need borders and backing, why take the time to match patterns when smart, creative people like you have already put together such a beautiful selection!

...adore the pillow with the buttons :-)

    ReplyDelete
  104. Precuts are so much fun and quick to make a finished product. I have 10 grandchildren so I'm trying to make at least 2 quilts per year for Christmas presents. They just love them and I enjoy making them.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Wow, I adore your new patterns! The pillow from "Plum Perfect" is so inventive, love the scalloped triangles :) Yeppers, I really like precuts. I find them so pretty, I have a difficult time opening them. So, I've found what works for me is to buy the precuts with a specific pattern at purchase, keep them together until sewing time. Between purchase & sewing I revisit the fabric to visually adore & emotionally know I own every swatch within this specific group :D

    ReplyDelete
  106. I love precuts! It's so much fun to have all those different coordinating fabrics together. I just love looking at them and drooling over them. They are also easy to use because a lot of the cutting is done for you, and there are lots of neat patterns, including yours, to use them with.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I haven't use precuts very much, just charm packs quilte often because I make a lot of doll quilts and mini quilts. I have used (once) a jelly roll (and it just so happened to be a KTQ roll) to make a quick quilt! It was fun using it. I love your "left-overs" pillow. I may have to buy a wavy blade and try this pattern out. HUGS... and stitches

    ReplyDelete
  108. Precuts are great! You can't always get or see the complete collection at the quilt shop, but you can get them in the precuts.
