It's been a looooong week of feeling yuckier than I have in years. A bug bit me hard and has hung on for almost a week now. Thought it was probably strep throat at first, but a negative result on the test showed it was "just a virus", meaning no antibiotics. I was told to wait it out. After several miserable days of severe sore throat and feeling like I was going to cough up a lung, I went back to the Dr. She gave in and ordered drugs - finally - that are slowly starting to kick in. Today is the first day I've felt well enough to even blog.
So, enough with the whining. Let's get on with something way more fun. How about a giveaway? Onalee sent in this picture of her Fiddlesticks quilt using KT fabrics. Thanks for sharing - it looks great! This is a simple pattern to piece featuring 2 1/2" strips. I've got the pattern and some strips to get you started if you comment here by Sunday 10pm. ReplyDeleteI have come down with something also... lots of Vit. C, and hot tea with lemon and honey. Also I do a lot with herbs. Two that work great are Echinacea Supreme and the one and only thing I use for sore throat is Pau D'Arco. I use them in a liquid form with a dropper. The Pau D'Arco i drop right down my throat... it makes your throat stop hurting almost immediately! Some are afraid to try these herbs... but these ones are my go to when I feel a cold coming on. Mine started yesterday, this morning I had a sore throat, just a dropper full and that is gone. Cold not gone, but it does keep it from lasting so long. I get these at my local health food store.

Sorry to hear that you weren't feeling well. Last year I had that awful cough that seemed to hang on forever. Someone told me to try honey and lemon and it either worked or the cough just ran its course. Thanks yet again for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI put on an old thermal undershirt that used to belong to my Dad and rub my whole chest down with Vicks. The shirt is almost the only thing I have of Dad's and I just love wearing it when I'm sick-makes me feel wrapped in his love.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are feeling better. We always go with the hot lemon with honey. The hotter the better. When the cough is bad--straight honey on a spoon. Along with some of the old remedies such as rubbing Vicks on the bottom of your feet!!! It does work.

ReplyDeleteNothing is worse than a sore throat. You don't want to swallow but it seems like that's all you do. I read somewhere to cure a sore throat wrap a wool sock around your neck. I don't know why a sock but keeping your neck warm does makes you feel better.

Have a really really hot soak in the bath and drink a hot drink at the same time. This is supposed to help heat up the body enough to kill off a stubborn virus. Have your flannel jammies waiting near by to keep you warm when you are done. Feel better soon. This looks like a fast and fun pattern. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that you are feeling a bit better. Don't you love the "it's just a virus" line? Ugh. I had "just a virus" a few years back. Not fun. After the third day of a fever, I thought I was going to die. Remember to drink lots of water and some toasty chicken noodle soup. I never drink enough and my cough get out of control.

ReplyDeleteHere it goes...herbal teas that contain echinacea, ginger, and some honey to sweeten that tea. Airborne, the stuff you can buy at a drugstore or wal-mart or target and let it dissolve in water--take it at the first sign of illness, or when you are going to travel on an airplane, or be around a lot of folks during cold/flu season. Oil of oregano capsules work wonders for the immune system! Also, odorless garlic helps sore throats, and is a natural antibiotic. Hope this helps! God bless you, and thank you for your blog! :)

ReplyDeleteOur all time favorite cold remedy is Oil of Oregano. My children don't like the taste, but have come to realize that it works!!! Now they ask for it whenever a sore throat or drippy nose start. I use Oreganol P73. Just 3 or 4 drops in 2 oz of juice and swig it down. And the cold is gone in about 3 days!!

ReplyDeleteVitamin C, but not from a pill. I have an orange almost daily and when I start having a sore throat (even a tickle) I start gargling with warm salt water and drink hot tea with honey and lemon. I'm serious about the tea - a few years ago I was scheduled to sing for my nephew's wedding and got laryngitis. About a half gallon of hot tea and lemon and honey in 24 hours shook it so I could sing. Good luck and thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteI have displaced ribs, so I can't get coughing colds, so I do take cillin when I have to.
Another thing I do when I am sick is make spaghetti sauce with hot peppers and red pepper. The red pepper sweetens the sauce and the hot gives it a nice zing, plus everything in it is full of vitamin C.

One thing I do religiously is to wash my hands as soon as I come home from being out in public. I try to stop those germs at the door. I'm a big believer in Zicam when I feel symptoms coming on. It really seems to stop or minimize anything that tries to get a foothold in my respiratory system. Staying hydrated also helps the immune system.
ReplyDeleteI find it essential to go for a walk outside every day to get fresh air and blow the germs away. I work at a University and the students are always sick around me. I also soak in a hot bath every night to relieve stress, followed by a good night's sleep. Of course, quilting on the weekends to restore my sanity too! Welcome to the 'flu' club! I too have been ill with the crud for over a week. My absolute favorite is chicken noodle soup, warm baths and my electric lap robe. Anything that provides comfort! Love the pattern and fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThat quilt is the fourth quilt made from Kansas Troubles fabric - was down to smaller 2 1/2" pieces. I really like a tea made from boiling a piece of gingeroot (about the size of your thumb) and cut in half lenghtwise, in 4 cups water with 2-3 cinnamon sticks. Refrigerate, then when you need a tea, heat with a tsp of honey. This sooths a cough. Also, I start taking Airborne as soon as I feel like a cold is coming on.

I am so sorry you have been sick. I have found that lots of liquids...hot or cold...keeps the "junk" more fluid and easier to blow or cough out. A nice warm quilt and flannel jammies make you feel more comfortable. Don't forget your flu shot.

I swear by a hot bath in which I've poured rubbing acholol. it'll ease a sore muscle and cool a fever. And don't forget the Vicks Vabor rub!

One yr DD had a child in her class very allergic to peanuts, they put a sink outside the classroom, and everyone had to wash their hands before going into the classroom~ what a difference it made with colds in her class that year! Healthiest kids in school. LOL So I'm always telling DH and the kids, wash your hands! LOL Hope you feel better soon!

Glad to hear that you are beginning to feel better! When I think that I may have a virus, I begin drinking lots of ice cold water or hot peppermint tea. Spraying my nose with Saline solution helps. I'm completely hooked on Black Cherry sugar free cough drops:) Take care! Take naps if you can.

My cold remedies are: lots of rest, as much as possible; echinacea and vitamin C-- mega doses; lots of clear liquids and hot chicken soup; Nyquil at night-- helps me sleep; and if I'm achy or feverish-- tylenol (and if I'm really bad, I take Ibuprofen too-- just be sure to eat something with it..)

Sorry to hear you have been feeling poorly...never any fun. Along with the usual, drink lots of liquid, get lots of rest, Vit C and chicken soup my Mom was a big believer in making regular jello and drinking it down while it was a warm liquid. It was easy to 'eat', gave needed calories and settled an uneasy stomach. Hope you feel better soon.

OOOOO K... here goes. I read this recently - and it sounds a bit painful - but - when you have fever - IF you put ice at your feet and wrap them up at night as you sleep... your body will send the heat down to your feet and you'll wake up fever free. Have not tried this (not sure I would) but - ?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite best thing I like when I am sick - is - Phenergran and sleep it off with a dog on both sides of me cuddled up close. I ask to keep phenergran (sp?) in my home for midnight emergency's.
When your throat hurts so badly - anything to numb your throat... like popsicles - icy cold numbing sweet ice. If you get real fruit ones - you can be adding vitamin C too.

I hope you are feeling better. My favourite remedy? Echineacea and also the juice from 1/2 lemon freshly squeezed in a cup of cold water. Seems to work for me.

ReplyDeleteWow Lynne, I am so sorry to read that you have felt yucky sick. It seems I am either super healthy or really sick, not much in between. Over the years I have narrowed down what works for me...when I feel as if I may be getting sick I start with two echinacea herbal supplements (too harsh on an empty stomach, eat prior to taking) and one supplement every 12 hours for 2 or 3 days; drink more water than you care to and keep warm. If my throat hurts, the old rememdy of salt in warm water to gargle (sp?) with as often as I can...I haven't found anything that works better. If you don't have echinacea, zinc tablets can be substituted but I never take more than 1 every 12 hours, never longer than 2 days. Hope you find what works for you to keep those yucky colds away.

"they" say we are dehydrated and that we need more fluids which is why we feel achy. And I allow myself to sleep and rest.

My suggestions for staying well is to always get a flu shot each year, and always use the hand sanitizer cloths they have at the door of the grocery store/WalMart to wipe down the cart before touching it. And my tip for controlling a cough is chewing gum - Wrigley's 5 Cobalt works really well for me. Thanks for the chance to win.

Love the quilt! I just found a box of KT leftovers (I always purchase at least 1/2 yard more than the pattern requires) and decided to use them for my first BOM project. My 8y/o twins have had a nasty cold and when I made chicken soup, the youngest said, "OH! I LOVE this kind! (Lots of carrots & clear broth). Hope you feel better soon!

ReplyDeleteI love grapefruit and I find if I eat 1/2 a grapefruit a day I stay well. I find eating an orange will do it too. Lots of vitamin C.

Oh boy, sorry you are stuck with this bug. I think our warmer conditions this winter are lending to all of these bugs floating around. Just make sure you get enough rest and I have found that "Musinex" helps to clear up some of that excess crud we cough up. Love the quilt and everything looks so great in KT fabrics.

ReplyDeleteWhen I am sick like that, I sometimes am able to convince my husband to make his cure-all soup for me. It's great when you're congested or if you're suffering from an upset stomach. Saute finely chopped onion in just a little bit of butter until translucent. Add a can of chicken broth (we use Swanson). Serve hot and enjoy. Simple yet I think it's effective. Of course, part of it might be the fact that I'm being waited on LOL!

ReplyDeleteBless your heart. About this time last year, I suffered through a nasty viral illness that sounds similar to your experience. I try not to touch my face, my glasses, and especially my eyes whenever I am out and about, hoping that I won't infect myself. However, I knew the exact moment I infected myself in this particular instance. My son had been ill. I accidentally picked up his water glass and took a sip. I hoped I hadn't caught his bug, but a few days later, I succumbed. Had the sore, raw throat, and the cough seemed to hang on forever! I think my constant coughing spread germs to my two parrots, and they ended up at the vet for treatment. The birds recovered after receiving antibiotics. What a costly epidemic that turned out to be (in our home, anyway)!

ReplyDeleteI had what you have...only longer. You MUST have homemade chicken soup. If you cannot cook an organic whole chicken for broth, use two breasts. Cook until meat is ready to fall off. Strain. Put in fridge for fat to collect to top. Discard fat. In the broth put cut up celery hearts, small chopped onion, organic carrots, chopped.Put one container of Pacific organic chicken broth. Add fresh organic parsley. In separate pot, cook pasta. I prefer homemade pasta but it is hard to find in the store. Put that into your soup along with the shredded pieces of chicken. I would make this for you if I could. Please try this...it is my life saver and has been for 40 years...Love, Mary

ReplyDeleteSo sorry you have been feeling under the weather! My favorite treatment for a bad cold/sore throat is to chow down on really hot (think jalapenos), freshly made salsa. For me, it seems to burn a sore throat out very quickly. I also load up on lots of vitamin C.

My all-time favorite cold/flu remedy was a hot toddy made for me by British nun. I was in college, traveling in the UK, and had picked up Something Nasty. Coughed so much I didn't have a voice any more. Coughed so much, I wasn't able to sleep. The sister brought me this wonderful hot drink that soothed my throat and then knocked me out. The uninterrupted sleep meant I was miles better the next day! I think it was brandy+honey+hot water, but I regret to say I didn't ask when I thanked her.

Viruses run their course. That said the best remedy I do is wash evey door knob and handle you contact. The bathroom, stove & fridge. Be sure to clean your computer key board just no soap and water as the two don't mix! The reason, while your body is trying to fight you are an easy target for more germs and can transfer to others easily. Handles are one of the best storehouses. Hot water and soap work best. Find a warm corner and heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteI've become a believer in Zicam. I started with a sore throat a couple of months ago and started the Zicam right away for the next 48 hours. Oh, I did get the cold, but it really only lasted 4-5 days instead of the 10+ and didn't settle in my lungs like it normally does.

I can't take a lot of cold medications due to other medications - my go to soother is Tang, but made with hot water instead of cold. It is citrusy and helps soothe my throat and open up my sinuses. Knock on wood- I have not needed it yet this season. Hope you feel better soon!

ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you've been under the weather. Lots of bed rest and chicken noodle soup is my remedy. And I always practice avid hand washing to help avoid getting sick in the first place. Hope you're feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteI have no remedy just alot of sympathy.My husband just went through it coughed for 2 1/2 weeks and he is recovering from open heart surgery (dec7) at the same time.Very painful to cough.Hope you are better soon.
ReplyDeleteI just read the remedies. I try Robitussin, hot tea and honey, drink a lot of water/liquids, and get plenty of sleep. A nice stack of patterns to read, or quilt magazines, a little hand work---always a thought to try and keep my mind off of being sick. A warm quilt or two to cover with. Hope you feel better. ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you are down and out. Sounds like your're going to make a speedy recovery with those meds. I make some good homemade chicken noodle soup. With the homemade noodles and frozen vegetables(from the garden). Along with alot of water and rest. Something my grandma told me to do. I gotta hand it to her, it works for me and my family. Hope you are feeling even better this evening. I'm very lucky as I don't get sick. I can't remember when the last time was that I had a cold or flu. (I'm knocking on wood.) I try not to say that too much as I'm afraid one of these times I'm going to get with something terrible. I attribute my "healthiness" to eating a yogurt every morning for breakfast. It seems that ever since I started doing this I haven't been sick. I would drink alot and get extra rest if I was sick as that's what my mom always said would help make you feel better. Love the quilt. Take care of yourself.

I try very hard not to catch anything so I keep up with flu and pneumonia shots, wash my hands whenever I go out ( carry little bottle of hand sanatizer )and in the winter try to avoid crowded places. If I start not feeling well, I drink lots and lots of fluids and sleep alot under my comforter and quilts, better if my kitty snuggles with me :) Just have to remember your body is struggling to get better so just rest no matter what you think you have to do.

ReplyDeleteI hope you are feeling better. In our house the best remedy is definitely chicken soup. I always make extra and keep a container or two in the freezer. When I am sick, all I have to do is defrost and heat.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear you were under the weather. I usually have at the very least, turkey broth in the freezer (made from the Thanksgiving "remains"). It makes great soup. I think the remedy has something to do with the steam as you eat it as hot as you can stand it. I am also a believer in giving in, going to bed under a wonderful quilt and not worrying about what needs to get done. Glad you are on the mend and thanks for another great give away.

ReplyDeleteI use hand sanitizer and wash my hand so much in the winter I have to use lots of hand lotion. I have not been sick in a few years (Hope I didn't stick my foot in my mouth). My family been doing too and we have been healthy.

So sorry to hear you have been sick, I pray you will be much better!! You may not believe this, if you are all stuffy with nasal congestion, maybe a bit of scratchy throat, if you will rub some Vicks Vapo-rub all on your neck around your tonsil area, and even put a dab of it into your nose before you go to bed at night, when you wake in the morning you will feel all better!!

Being sick is such a waste of our time. I hope you are up and feeling much better. When I start to feel a sore throat or cough come on I really overload on vitamin C both a supplement and oj. And then I work really hard at talking myself out of being sick...sort of mind over matter. It works some of the time. Your pattern and, of course, the fabric both working together to make a really great looking quilt. Love the chance to win...maybe 2012 will be my lucky year. Thanks!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've been there too - I use Vicks as well as strong cough drops, peppermint, hot green tea/lemon/honey, GatorAde, a hot rice bag for the achy parts, and lots of rest.

I use Vicks also on your chest and throat. My husband hates the smell, but I think it helps. I am also a believer in the NeilMed Sinus Rinse. Start using it at the first sign of a sinus problem.

Advil cold and sinus seem to work well for me and dont make me feel yuckier than i already do, get some extra rest if you can love the fiddle sticks quilt she did a great job
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you are sick. I haven't gotten a flu for years and am grateful for that. I did have a short cold recently that hubby gave me :P I had just made a mixed fruit salad with grapefruit, oranges and pomegranate seeds and kept a bowl in the fridge...ate it up in three days and when I finally started his cold, it wasn't nearly as bad or long in duration...I say get some vitamin C!!!!

Relax your body and mind, people feel better when they let everything go. That quilt is beautiful and love the fabrics, of course, they're my faves.

At the first sign of a cold or flu, I start drinking baking soda and water, 1/2 tsp per mug I believe. I drink it every couple of hours to start and then less as I feel better. Room temp water tastes the best to me and I just chug it all down so I only have to taste it once. The purpose is to balance your body's PH and make it more alkaline, which is an environment in which viruses cannot survive. I originally got the tip from an old Edgar Cayce book. Generally works pretty well for me.

ReplyDeleteI drink ginger tea. Fresh ginger is good for the immune system, so throw some in a stir fry too. I like zinc lozenges for a sore throat.

Lots of great remedies to try! I had the same creepin crud and it continues to hang on but not like the first few days. I've found my humidifier to be a god-send and anything "mentholated." Just try to keep "rested" so we don't run ourselves down and get it all over again!

ReplyDeleteMy mohter always made me drink hot tea. To this day I consider tea to be "medicine". But, my Mammaw started every day with a pot of tea and lived to be 89.
ReplyDeleteWhen I got the crud last month nothing was working. I resorted to hot tea, lemon and honey - heavy on the lemon. If my cough got too bad I switched the tea to bourbon but kept the honey and lemon and as hot as I could stand it. It did help a lot.
Lots of fluids. Chicken soup really does have some healing properties. Good luck and thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeleteLynne, OK, here's the "cure" from an old office nurse of many years...first off, take a good hot shower, that will clear everything, then, have a pair of buttered (real, not not not margarine) toasts, and a small cup of V8, then finish it off with some good hot Red Rose tea...the shower alone will make you feel human again, and the liquids and vitamins in the juices and tea will spruce you up, the buttered toast will activate all the energy..take care, do not even think of housework...Feel better, take those meds...Best, Jeanne
ReplyDeleteWash your hands often. Think of the grocery cart at the store, the door to the public restroom, and the list goes on. Don't touch your face or put your fingers to your mouth. There are so many things you can touch where you will pick up other people's germs. Hope you are feeling better. Cheryl
